Sofitel Hotel Vienna

Huge bowls of elegantly arranged white roses and lilies welcomed us into the lobby at the four-star Hotel Sofitel in Vienna. A prime location at 35-37 Am Heumarket, we were in the heart of the baroque capital of the world and very close to the Ringstrasse, St Stephens Cathedral, the Opera House and Karntner Strasse (the prestigious shopping district).

Room 309 was assigned as our home during our stay from May 15-18, 2004. Tastefully decorated with artwork inspired by the painter Gustav Klimt, there was a small sitting area and table by the window. Although our third-floor room overlooked the street, we did not notice an excess of traffic noise. Our queen-sized bed had a feather-bed comforter, and the low voltage Italian spotlights which served as reading lamps were very functional, as well as quite stylish. We liked them so much that we managed to buy a pair during our stay for our bedroom at home.

The well-appointed bathroom was truly an elegant pleasure. The tiled sunken tub featured a shower above and an oversized adjustable showerhead. A generous basket of designer soaps, lotions and shampoos by Roger Gallent rested nearby and gigantic fluffy white towels and robes were a delight for us weary travelers.

The hotel offers a superb breakfast buffet in the Rhapsody Restaurant each morning. Since my husband and I enjoy a "low-carb lifestyle," we were especially pleased with the varied assortment of egg dishes, cheeses, hot and cold meats and melons. Our "non-low carb" friends were equally happy with the lovely array of pastries! In the evening, the "Pullman Bar," just off the lobby, was a quiet spot for a glass of wine or cocktails before dinner. Rates ranged from 110-226 Euros per night and Hotel services were exceptional throughout our stay!

After putting away those breakfasts, we needed the short stroll to the Staddpark (City Park) to walk things off! The underground station, located just two blocks away, gave us easy access for day trips to the Hofburg Palace, the Prater, Schoenbrunn and the Kunsthistoriches Museum.

Tour groups from all over the world were ever in evidence at the Sofitel. We enjoyed watching as Chinese, Japanese, Americans, Germans and other groups arrived and departed. VERY cosmopolitan!
