Expensive, understated quality

I attended a conference at this hotel, so the rate was much below market rate. I upgraded from a Cityview room to a Lakeview room. The two rooms are identical, the only difference is the view, so decide if the view is worth the extra. In my case, I thought it might be quieter facing the lake, and it gave me a fabulous view of the bridge where the famous Austin bats emerge each night. The room was attractive and comfortable. I liked that the small fridge in the room containing items you have to pay for could be emptied out and filled with my own items. Room service charges were exhorbitant: $ total for a salad with seared chicken on it, and the greens were not fresh by the time I got the meal. Outside of meals provided by the conference, I didn't eat at the hotel. Service was wonderful. One weird thing is that they don't put a book in your room acquainting you with the locations of all their services (pool, spa, ice machines, etc.) When I asked about it, the desk clerk immediately and cheerfully offered to escort me around the hotel showing me where everything was, which was nice, but not what I wanted. I loved the robe they provided, and the bath amenities were wonderful. Housecleaning staff were great, turndown service every night also good. They didn't have an option to re-use the towels, I wish they'd do that to save water. Speaking of which, the water pressure was insanely good. Can't imagine how much water they're using daily in a desert environment. Overall, I'd definitely stay there again, but not if I have to pay full freight myself.

Excellent Hotel, Overpriced Room

My husband, two kids (5 years and 2 1/2 years old) and myself took a vacation to Austin, Texas for a couple of days and we decided to stay at the Four Seasons. Because there is construction going on City side of the hotel, we upgraded to a Lakeview Suite. The Lakeview suite was double the money and then some -- but we figured, Hey, we are on vacation and for that price, this has got to be luxurious. Well, I'm sorry to say that I was very disappointed with both the size and the look of the suite. It was much smaller than I anticipated and the furnishings were very basic. Just a basic pull out sofa -- no frills at all. The bathroom was very small and very plain looking. My husband and I have travelled a lot before and this room was most definitely not worth the price tag. That being said, everything else, and I mean everything, was superb. The service was incredible, everyone was polite and we were all treated like celebrities. Honestly, the staff is wonderful and made us all as comfortable as possible. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful and the pool was very relaxing and there was plenty of room to sit and sun. I also got a massage at the spa and it was fantastic -- except the head rest was extremely uncomfortable on my forehead and gave me a tremendous headache for hours afterward. It kind of ruined the great massage. So, if you use the Spa -- tell the masseur about this. The staff were absolutely fantastic with our children and the hotel is very very kid friendly. My advice: do not waste your money on a suite -- just get a basic room. I wish we had.

Not a five star hotel!

Horrible stay overall given that this is supposed to be a 5 star hotel which it is NOT. It has one outdoor pool which is off the other side of the hotel and barely heated for our stay. Spa also terrible with no whirlpool, sauna. Only a small steam room in each locker room. Room and view were nice in downtown Austin, but that is about it. No tennis courts nor golf and only 3 or 4 spa treatment rooms. Gym area pointless with only a few treadmills and free weights. Will not stay again given price and lack of amenities. How is this 5 star??? not a typical four seasons for sure!!

The Four Seasons Austin is a convenient and luxurious place to stay in Austin because it is between the two major sites of Austin: the dozens of bars on Sixth Street and the biking/jogging trails along Town Lake. The service at The Four Seasons Austin was friendly and helpful, not stuffy and overly formal as you might expect. The concierge and doormen were very open with recommendations on dining and sights to see.

The hotel is located along the banks of Town Lake, and out of the back door you'll find a manicured lawn and pool area that leads to the busy running path. Austin seems to be a very fit city when compared to other places like Houston. The fitness center at the hotel is also well-equipped with many treadmills.

The famous Congress Avenue "bat bridge," which is home to millions of friendly bug-eating bats during the summer, is just 100 yards from the hotel. The area around the hotel is primarily made up of office complexes, which means the neighborhood is quiet at night, but you are only 7 blocks or so away from Sixth Street, which is packed with bars and nightclubs. We enjoyed the piano bar downstairs and the talented singer who performed in the evenings.

The rate for this hotel was a bargain during the slow period between Christmas and New Year. We paid about $175 per night, and I found this rate on their website.

It is located in the center of the city, so it was easy to get around the city. Plus, there is the bus that goes almost all over the city. We stayed in the water-view room, but the river is not really something. It was still nice, though.

We borrowed a crib, and they also gave us diapers and a diaper-disposal container. They also have strollers to borrow, which made our trip with a baby easy.

We requested a room with a king-size bed; we should have requested one with two twin beds or a queen-size bed. Our room was quite small, but we heard other people talking how big the rooms are.
