Our first visit to Pittsburgh and we ddn't know what to expect. This hotel was great, the service was outstanding and rooms were large. The shuttle service brought us were ever we wanted to go and did a nice job of making recommendations of places to visit and eat. We took our family and it was perfect. The breakfast was very good. We would defintely recommend to anyone.

Courtyard by Marriott

I must first start with my general bias against small, cramped downtown mid-city hotels. Typically overpriced, guests typically pay for the convenience of being close to the convention center or other draws to the area. Knowing that Courtyard by Marriott is the midprice offering of the Marriott family of lodging, my expectations were not very high. I was pleasantly surprised . . . VERY surprised!!

The main lobby area of the hotel was bright and very spacious. Very inviting and welcoming to travelers who may arrive a bit on the harried and tired side. A bowl of fresh fruit was available when I arrived . . . and plates of freshly baked cookies were available later in the afternoon and evening.

I arrived late morning with a 3:00pm published check-in time. Fully expecting to have to check my bags with the bellman, I was happy to hear that my room was ready. Inside my room was enough floor space to dance a jig or maybe a polka since I’m now working in Wisconsin. Not only did my room have plenty of floor space, the layout was conducive for relaxing or working. The full ground to ceiling windows afforded me a wonderful city view, even if it was rather cloudy and rainy for most of my stay. Oh, did I mention the high ceilings? It was easily 20, maybe 25 feet from floor to ceiling. The décor of the room was very neutral, with warm earth tone colors with colorful splashes of blue throughout.

Of course, the real measure of comfort in a hotel room is the bathroom, right ladies? This bathroom was very nice with a large vanity and sink area and the rounded shower curtain rod to allow for comfortable showers without that clingy plastic annoyance.

On my first morning in town, conference attendees were on their own for breakfast. Since Courtyard by Marriott is a lower end hotel, I was concerned about the lack of in-room dining. The hotel, however, does feature a full breakfast buffet for $10.95 . . . a very good value given that guests have a full range of fruits, cold & hot cereals, fresh pastries and breads . . . and cook to order eggs, omelets and waffles. Add coffee, milk, and/or juice of your choice and easily you have all the nourishment one could need. If you are interested in dining on the go, scope out the Bruegger’s Bagels or Starbucks.

Because of the lack of room service options, the restaurant adjacent to the hotel is an outstanding choice if you really do not want to venture into the city. Sonoma Grille is a “novu California dining experience” that was a good first choice for dinner. Within walking distance of the hotel, there are another ten or 12 additional choices including Italian (Bravo Franco Ristorante), Greek (Salonika’s) and Thai (Lemongrass Café). You don’t need to look far to find steak (Ruth Chris or Mortons), seafood (Fish Market inside the Westin) or pizza (Café Milano).

If you fly into Pittsburgh and do not rent a car, there is the Express Shuttle that is $35 roundtrip and very convenient. If you do rent a car, be prepared to pay for city valet parking. The hotel does have a free shuttle service that is available to guests, which will take you anywhere in the general downtown area. I utilized the service to go to the Carnegie Science Center which was a couple of miles from the hotel, on the other side of the river and not a very convenient or easy walk.

At a convention rate of just $120/night, I do not think there was a better hotel value available to attendees in our group. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel, even at their full rack rate of $169/night for a double/double.

I had just arrived at the hotel after a very long trip from Texas. I had to drive from San Antonio to Atlanta over night, catch a flight to Pittsburgh at 9am. I was over-tired and had to quickly shower and change to head to my engagement. When I arrived at the desk, not one of the three agents greeted me with a smile or hello, one in fact raised her eyebrow at me and treated me like I was a second class citizen. I was dressed in flip flops, cargo shorts and a 2-day old t-shirt with a heavy shadow as I could not shave or shower for 2-days.

No great value

"2nd time staying here on business. Rooms very standard, no amenities such as microwave/refrigerator/fruit in lobby etc. You want it, you pay, even for the bottled water in the room. Don't expect a room with a view of the city. "

great place to stay
