Description: Penticton is a city in the southern province of British Columbia and has over 32,000 inhabitants. The hotel is located in the city center, about 10 minutes walk from Okanagan Lake and is therefore quite central. If you want to stay here a few days to relax on the beach of Okanagan Lake the hotel has a perfect location. Parking is possible at both lakes.
First of all, we had a little trouble finding the Sandman Hotel Penticton. The lobby looks very appealing and just as well we saw the picture beforehand. The lobby has a gray, sparkling tile floors with a modern, spacious reception, beautiful lighting, nice details such as modern paintings on the walls, or flower vases on the tables turn the lobby into a place that is quite inviting. The cosy sitting area with armchairs and sofas, a fireplace and two televisions set into the wall also makes a good impression. Indeed the somewhat dreary impression one gets when one looks at the hotel from the outside, inside quickly faded. So we set a positive outlook on the way to our room. Rooms are available on all three floors, including the ground floor. Our room was located on the first floor, then yes this is the level 2 since the ground counts.
The Sandman Hotel Penticton has standard rooms, executive rooms and suites. Some rooms are equipped with kitchenettes. We had booked a normal standard room. But even with the standard rooms there are differences. Thus, half the rooms have a view outside, with luck, even in the mountains, the other half has a window to the atrium pool. That is, looking only at the inner pool and not outside. Fortunately, our room had no pool view, but as already mentioned, the next nasty surprise came right when you open the door ...
Since it is very hot in Penticton, the curtains were drawn to block out the sun, so it was dark when we opened the door to you. But before we could turn on the light, we noticed something else: intense smell of stale smoke! We switched on the light, entered and there the smell even more. Here we had before, not only smoked one cigarette. Now we had a Non smoking rooms and a cardboard cutout also announced on TV that you can not smoke here, since otherwise it costs $ 200 penalty. Nevertheless, the whole room stank. Since my husband and I both do not smoke, that was not acceptable to us, of course. We pulled the curtains aside and wanted to reveal, but there was unfortunately no way to open the window because there is renewed only with air-conditioning air. So we turned this one, but apart from that it is now loud rustling seemed to do nothing. So my husband called the front desk and explained that it would smell like smoke and asked for another room. Unfortunately, the lady at the reception were, but they sold out and there was only one room with windows overlooking the pool free of what they are but discouraged in the same sentence, as the air conditioner would attract "fresh air" from the pool area and is therefore would have a strong chlorine smell in the room. But they would send someone up, to refresh the room. Now you might think so, because someone comes and brings some tool to open the windows and ventilate properly once, but I was wrong. After just two minutes a maid knocked on and began to spray fragrance carpets, curtains and bedspreads to spray. She also said that it would smell really strong and we will call you again could if we needed more. Now everything smelled very flowery and we had the hope that the room after dinner, when we came back again, through the air conditioning, we were running, would smell better.
After this initial shock, we looked closely at the room first. As you can see from the photos I've uploaded, these are a typical standard room, as found it anywhere in Canada or the United States. However, it is somewhat smaller than it is otherwise known from the hotels to North America. The floor is carpeted, which still showed no visible contamination. The two beds (each approximately 1.35 m) were covered with striped bedspreads. The red curtains fitted well to the overall picture. All the furniture was dark wood, except for the two red chairs and black office chair at a desk. At other furniture, there is a small dining table, TV cabinet with built-in dresser, night table and in the door there is a cloakroom where there are also mandatory for the North American iron and ironing board. The equipment in this room, I think, totally normal, just standard.
Sandman Hotels offer basically not serve breakfast, that is, here you pay more on it once. Every hotel chain that is connected to at least one restaurant. We arrive here in Penticton, without having to go outside, through a hallway to a branch of the restaurant chain Denny's. It is an American diner chain, of which there are now but also 59 restaurants in Canada. Denny's is a typical diner that's open 24 hours. There is a very large breakfast menu, but also hot meals, if you want to eat lunch or dinner there. The kitchen is now, of course, no star cuisine, but the dishes are quite tasty, modestly priced and if one likes to eat in a relaxed atmosphere, then it just right. We had breakfast three times during our vacation in Canada Denny's, so also in Penticton. The offerings range from scrambled eggs on pancakes to hearty meat dishes that I would not necessarily eat in the morning. But you can also just get a few slices of toast, a yogurt cup or fruit cup. Overall we were satisfied.
We were warmly welcomed and adopted, and our complaint was received warmly. Almost immediately after the call came in, someone to improve the smell in the room, but unfortunately did not succeed. Of course we had to call again, but it makes no sense if a flowery fragrance smell the smoke covered up, fresh air is then not yet. Unfortunately, we do not know if the hotel really - except for the pool room, which would have been available at the exchange - was fully booked, or if there is still a better room category would have been that we would have to leave in doubt. The fact that the smell does not go away that should have been able to conceive. The question is whether the person was actually in our room for a Non smoking rooms, or whether it was a smoking room in advance. Such a cardboard cutout so you can quickly put into it, if a Non smoking room is required. From this was all a bit obscure and I would have expected something more. On the other hand, it's just a simple hotel, because we must not expect too much. Thus, the service is still in order.
