This room was extremely clean and the price was excellent. The location is right downtown close to everything. I will be back again.

Too much noise

Both the Courtyard by Marriott and the Marriott Residence Inn share the remodeled Humble Oil office building. Rooms are nice and fairly comfortable. However, rooms facing the city streets are quite noisy. The replacement windows do not block out street noise. You want an interior room facing an air shaft. These rooms are much quieter, though there is no view. Staff is very friendly and the hotel is conveniently located right next to Houston's light rail system. Food and service in restaurant is not up to Marriott standards. The lobby bar is very small, and cigarette smoke tends to find its way into the dining area. The Courtyard was my second choice for downtown lodging in Houston. Fitness room is small and limited, but the third floor outdoor pool is nice.

Courtyard by Marriott Houston Downtown/Convention Center

Courtyard by Marriott Houston Downtown/Convention Center

Located in the historic Humble Towers, one of Houston's older skyscrapers, this downtown Courtyard hotel is literally right in the center of everything the city has to offer. The hotel is at the corner of Main St. and Dallas Ave., adjacent to the Main St. Square MetroRail Red Line station, across the street from the new Houston Pavilions retail, restaurant, and entertainment development (opening October 2008), and across the street from the downtown Macy's store. Also a short walk away are Houston's newest park, Discovery Green, lots of great restaurants, Minute Maid Park, the Toyota Center, many of downtown's major office towers, and the Theatre District. And it's just a short ride on the MetroRail red line to the Museum District, Hermann Park, the Texas Medical Center, Rice University, and Reliant Park. Yes, this hotel truly is in the middle of everything!

I recently spent a weekend at this Courtyard while back in Houston visiting friends. Weekend rates at this hotel are often quite reasonable for a downtown hotel in such a great location; rooms can often be found for around $99/night on the weekend. Granted, there is no free overnight parking, so if you have a car, you can expect to pay an additional $17/night for valet parking (self parking is not available in the hotel's garage). However, paying less than $120/night for accommodations of this quality in the middle of downtown in a major US city is unheard of these days, and in my opinion, the Courtyard is a very good value.

Despite the unique exterior appearance of the hotel, and its very nice public areas, the rooms are very standard Courtyard by Marriott rooms. While the conversion of the Humble Tower from an abandoned office skyscraper to a mixed use development containing two hotels (the Courtyard and a Residence Inn by Marriott), apartments, and retail establishments was very successful in preserving the building's exterior and lobby areas, the rooms do not feature the unique charm one might expect to find in such a conversion. That's not to say the rooms are bad in any way, because they are actually very nice. But they are the standard Courtyard rooms, with the same layouts and furnishings you would find in almost any other new or recently renovated Courtyard location. If you've ever stayed in a Courtyard, the rooms here will be quite familiar looking.

Rooms at the Courtyard feature one king or two double beds. King rooms usually have a sleeper sofa in them as well, allowing those rooms to comfortably sleep an additional guest. All of the amenities you would expect to find in a modern hotel of this class are available, including complimentary high-speed Internet access, in-room coffee service, an iron and ironing board, satellite television, and a nicely sized work desk with comfortable chair. While Courtyards do not typically offer a complimentary breakfast, the hotel's restaurant does provide a very nice breakfast buffet for around $10. Certain rate plans also include two breakfast buffets per guest per morning, and these are sometimes less than purchasing the room and two breakfasts separately. The hotel restaurant and bar is also open for dinner and evening lounge service, and evening room service is available to guests. There is also a small convenience shop located behind the front desk offering a variety of snacks, bottled beverages, and sundries at reasonable prices. Finally, the hotel offers a nice swimming pool and fitness center, which it shares with the adjacent Residence Inn and Humble Tower Apartments.

Overall I highly recommend this hotel. It's in a great location for a weekend visit to Houston, as well as for a business trip that involves work in downtown. The location is such that you could easily park the car and not need it to get to many of the attractions the city has to offer, since it is not only on the MetroRail line, but several major bus lines also run next to the hotel or about a block away (including the 82 Westheimer and 53 Westheimer Limited, both with frequent service to the Uptown Galleria area).

A little small

Our overall experience with this hotel was positive. However, the rooms are very small. If you are staying alone, then you'll be fine. We had two children and it was very tight! Everything else was great here!
