I was at the mercy of someone who lived in LA all his life. He assured me his friends all stayed at the Furama and that I would like it. I did do some checking and found people really thought that Furama was a nightmare, but to stay in the tower, as it's nicer than the run-down older part of the hotel.
When we checked in, the staff had no clue what we were talking about. They refused to put us in the tower, even though we called in advance to make sure we were in the tower and were assured we were. When we entered our rooms, we found them to be broken down, with badly mended holes punched in the walls, extremely stiff beds (which had big brown stains on the mattresses and box springs). The pillows, when you took off the pillow cases, were all yellowed with drool stains. The sheets had holes in them.
Onto the bathroom: faded and grimy sink section. All the towels were rough and stained.
Slight bad smell through out the hotel.
The room service was excellent, and the food was very good and served in generous portions. The bell desk offered great tours and was pretty good about getting us all on our shuttle buses.
The maid was terrific. When I asked the maid if they are going to remodel the old part of the hotel, she said no.
The front desk was very rude.
All in all, don't bother with this fleabag hotel. It's probably one of the worst places in which I've stayed.
