Orange Lake Country Club

Orange Lake Golf and Country Club is an enormous resort with several different "village" areas. You could easily spend a week just enjoying the resort, as there is so much to do. A free shuttle transports guests around the complex. There are also shuttles available (for a fee) to take you to the attractions of the area.

We had a two bedroom unit in a four story building in the West Village, the oldest in the complex. Many of the units are single story villas backing onto or facing the golf fairways. Other arrangements are in double storied villas or larger hotel size buildings. There are wide lawns, small copses of trees and man made lagoons.

With textured candle glow walls and wicker furniture with bright tropical prints, the units are nicely decorated. There is a large entertainment cabinet but the television inside is much smaller than the opening suggests. We find the lighting totally inadequate, especially in the kitchen where there is one dirty light with a 90-watt light bulb.

There is a screened porch with four chairs and a table overlooking the golf course. It is a lovely place to sit and relax, although the plastic chairs offer little lumbar support. Unfortunately all surfaces are full of spider webs and pods soon to release new spiders and there is a wasp’s nest hanging from the ceiling of our porch.

There is glass on the ledge between the windowpanes above the dining area bench—it seems a pane had broken and although they had replaced it, not all of the glass was removed. We also find glass in the cracks behind and underneath the bench.

My husband and I spent the entire next morning cleaning. It is disgusting how poorly the place is cleaned. We both had several conversations with the "front desk" and were referred to the appropriate department. On the phone, help was apparently "immediately on its way"-in reality, this was not the case at all.

Each "village" has a recreation center, with similar activities offered at each one and specific activities available at only one locale. There is a weekly agenda to help you figure out what is going on where and when.

The pools are an attraction all on their own, with a lazy river in one complex, a wave pool in another, fountains, sprinklers, playgrounds, tubes, slides and all sorts of fun for all ages. There are towels available and both shady and open areas with lots of lounge chairs, although unless you arrive fairly early in the day, you will have trouble finding an empty chair. Snacks and drinks can be charged to your room so you do not need to bring cash.

Sliding into cool, blue pools. . . making waves on a sparkling lake. . .sinking a putt at sunset. . . experiencing the fun and fantasy of Orlando theme parks. . . If you can dream it, you can do it all right here. At Orange Lake Orlando.

My parents have owned a timeshare at Orange Lake since the mid-80s and I have been there many times. My wife and I bought a week last year. Don't buy a timeshare from the resort. We bought our week (pre-owned) on eBay. Total cost for a week in August, including closing costs, was approximately $4,500. A coworker bought a less desirable November week from the resort the year before and paid over $10,000.

Check-in was a hassle. The woman who checked me in was pushy and wanted us to meet with their sales staff, to convert our week to points. We agreed to the one hour sales pitch and received approximately $67 worth of miniature golf and food/drink coupons for saying no.

They have built a lot of new units in recent years and I noticed the cleaning staff is having problems keeping up. Our unit was not as clean as past years and was missing quite a few kitchen items when we arrived. To their credit, someone brought the missing items within an hour of us phoning the front desk.

We ran into some rowdy college aged kids at the swimming pools. I hope this isn't a trend. In the past, Orange Lake was a family place.

We took our kids, age 4 and 5, to the new River Island water park (inside the resort). They hired attendants (we called them 'pool Nazis') to patrol the water park and make sure nobody uses store-bought inner tubes. If you want to use an inner tube, you are forced to rent one from the resort. The problem is, our children (ages 4 and 5) were unable to use the rented tubes - they slip right through. We were disgusted by the experience and vowed to never use the water park again.

Even though we had some problems this year, Orange Lake is still a very nice resort with plenty of activities. It is very close to Disney and other attractions in the Orlando area. If you want to stay on the resort, there is plenty to keep you entertained.

Best Things Nearby:
Disney theme parks, Universal Studios, Seaworld, Old Town, Cypress Gardens, Ivey Grove Farm, Boggy Creek Airboats, Gatorland.

Best Things About the Resort:
Friendly and helpful staff, quiet and calm, clean and very roomy, Lots of wild birds to see.

Resort Experience:
Just 4 miles from the Disney theme parks. Orange Lake offers an 18-hole Arnold Palmer-designed championship course, a 27-hole resort course, a lighted nine-hole par 3 walking course, and a 36-hole miniature course perfect for lovers of golf. Blue heron, ducks and many birds fly around here and land, they are all tame and feed from your hand. There are many planned activities and nightly entertainment. It was a haven of tranquility away from the bustle of the parks. For shopping there is a large Publix supermarket nearby, and on highway 192 there are numerous places to eat. Our favorite was the Black Angus steak house. For homesick Brits there is Ramsbottoms fish and chip shop. Just a short hop away from Orange Lake is the I4 to Sea World and Universal Studios. Just off highway 192 is Old Town a unique place with shops that provide good old-fashioned service; the candle shop offers unique gifts. Saturday night is not to be missed in Old Town, they have a vintage car parade you can see all those cars seen in American films of the 1950s and 1960s, with live music and one of those bucking bronco’s to ride. The Red Baron bar a friendly place hanging above the bar is a bi-plane; there is a saltwater taffy shop. A big wheel is at the entrance to the town along with one or two other old-fashioned rides. Top off your trip with a helicopter flight over Kissimmee and the theme parks.

Best Things Nearby:
Walt Disney World (your backyard by the way), Universal Studios, Sea World, Kennedy Space Center, Daytona Beach, Busch Gardens Tampa, and the list go on as far as your money hold up.

Best Things About the Resort:
Many amenities, beach, three golf courses, restaurants, and several swimming pools, and it's a very quiet place to boot.

Resort Experience:
Orange Lake Country Club and Resort is a classy place with many amenities and activities to keep you busy. The only problem would be if you were in the area for the world famous amusement parks, and your stay was built on park hopping, when to find the time to enjoy the great amenities and activities the resort offers. The resort do a good job of offering exciting packages to the parks and offers transportation for a small fee. RCI actually has a booth at this location, so there are opportunities to actually talk to a RCI rep in person. Orange Lake Country Club and Resort is a nice resort and will be on our revisit list.
