Very nice hotel

We spent 5 nights in August and the hotel was very nice, it was in a great location near public transportation which we used every day also the pool was very nice, I thought the hotel restaurant was a little over priced and it would have been nice if they had complementary coffee and donuts in the lobby for hotel guests, but over all we enjoyed our stay.

Never ever again.

We checked into the room and were less than pleased. It was musty and old and the bed was very small. Bathroom was tiny and had a cracked tub and plastic shower curtain. Day two of trip, ten am: awakened to actual JACKHAMMERING above our heads. It was so loud, that I had to scream into the phone to call the front desk, and my boyfriend couldnt hear me sitting 4 feet away. I was told that it was only going to be for that day. I asked for the supervisor, and inquired as to why they would even put us in that room when that kind of construction was going on. While Im going deaf, and on the phone, I am informed that Im only booked there for one night instead of two, and tries to blame it on travel website. Upon calling travel agency, I am vindicated, because I wouldnt make a rookie mistake like that. So they moved us to a suite 7 floors up, which was nice and obviously one of the rooms that had recently been renovated. This only angers me further, because if they HAD nice rooms like this, why did we get relagated to crappy jackhammer room in the first place?? That night, after the game, I go to take a shower and there is no hot water. I am told to let it run. The next day, still no hot water. I am told to go to YET ANOTHER EMPTY NICE ROOM because apparently our "suite" is the only one without it. Also: the maids were told repeatedly that we didnt need service, and came in at a very sensitive time. restaurant is poor, bar is expensive. Dont risk it.

Good Loop value

This hotel was economical and centrally-located, and it will be much nicer later in the year when renovations are finished. Nice pool and fitness area and helpful desk staff. Maid service inconsistent.

Though I live in Chicago I booked a room for the weekend with my family. The city was hit with a deep freeze of sub zero temperatures and our heat at home was out so we decided to book a place somewhere nice instead of freezing to death, so we made a weekend of it. The Essex Inn was just the place. Reservations online were problem free. We arrived to a warm and toasty room which was our salvation. We savored the heat and tasteful decor and rushed for a hot shower. The foloowing morning the hot water was rather cool due to frozen pipes but by afternoon was running very hot. The pool area was quite chilly. Hard to keep those sub zero temps out. Life guard was covered from head to toe for the great outdoors, The fitness room was okay. I spent a productive 2hrs on the equipment. The restaurnat downstairs was decent. The front desk guy xyz was great. Everything was wonderful until my car got towed in the morning for parking in a tow zone. I swear that sign was not there when I parked :) Would definitely visit again....soon.

Great stay!

VERY helpful and friendly staff, even at our midnight check-in. pool is top notch, as is location. Within walking distance of art institute and sears tower. Short cab ride to the pier. Our king suite had a great view of grant park across the street. Small bathroom could definitely use an upgrade, but who spends much time in a hotel bathroom anyway? There was an immediate turn as soon as you would walk in the room, which was fine by us, i guess it gives the room more space, it was very roomy, but this would be prohibitive for anyone in a wheelchair! Hotel room was a bargain, it was a MUCH nicer hotel than expected, and i was very impressed. I hope i get the opportunity to stay there again!
