Fairly Decent for the Money

The room we stayed in was somewhat small, but adequate. The furniture was a little on the shabby side. My chief complaint was that we did not receive maid service on the day we were told we would (they only come once a week). It took three phone calls over three hours to get them to come up and bring fresh towels.

Resort Experience:
We arrived late in the evening, after a long drive. The reception desk personnel were pleasant and helpful. However, the concierge, who at first was very friendly, offering a "welcome package," quickly became very aggressive in trying to get us to sign up for a sales pitch meeting later in the week and did not want to hear that we were not interested. As owners, we have never been pressured like this to submit to the sales department. We were told that we would be expected to pay $80 (refundable) up-front even to enter the meeting. We finally got the "no" to stick, but we did not feel comfortable approaching the concierge's desk for any help for the rest of the week.

The outside landscaping and general visual appeal was very attractive. However, we were very disappointed in our unit. It was roomy, with a nice floorplan, but the furnishings were awful. The couch and chair in the living room were very uncomfortable, and the bed was one of most uncomfortable we had ever had in any accommodation, including motels, so there was not even a "comfy" place to enjoy TV or a movie. Most of the furnishings were cheap and not what we expected in a gold crown unit. While we enjoyed the Scottsdale area, we avoided spending time at the resort, because we really had nowhere to relax in our unit. Other than the pool and some organized games and crafts activities, there was not much to do at the resort.

We loved the Scottsdale/Phoenix area. Lots of good day trips to take, and if you enjoy natural beauty, the Sonoran desert, with the fabulous Saguaro cacti, is fantastic. But stay in different accommodations.

Best Things Nearby:
Old Town Scottsdale is about 20 minutes of driving south on the Scottsdale Rd, well worth visiting. Papago City park just a little further and very nice for a relaxing afternoon. Hike up the Camelback Mountain offers great exercise with very nice views of Phoenix and the mountains around.

Best Things About the Resort:
Location.

Resort Experience:
We were disapponted with the resort. It may be due to being spoiled by other great places but we really expected more.

The studio was separated from another unit by a single locked door with a 1" gap in the bottom. You could hear every word the neighbors said plus light was getting through at night a lot.

For the square footage, the unit could have been better equipped. Drawers and balcony screen door were hard to slide.

There was no washer & dryer in the unit, only two of each available at the activity center for $1 each! We've never had to pay for laundry at a resort before.

To use all resort amenities, you will need a $1 card per unit. Not expensive but unpleasant. Also, right at checkin, concierge tried very hard to pitch us the resort tour and did not want to take a 'no' for an answer. Since we bought our timeshare, never did we have to listen to a sales pitch for so long. They still called the next day to try again but that person at least understood what 'no' means.

We also noticed that the resort cared little about saving water, being in the desert. Also, parking is limited and at times you will have to park quite away from you unit.

With all the things listed above, I am really not sure why this is a crown resort.

Best Things Nearby:
Golf courses, a great selection of restaurants (including the Waffle House), casinos. Also, close to the 101 loop (very helpful in getting around).

Best Things About the Resort:
Close to the 101 loop. Nice accommodations, pool was small but nice.

Resort Experience:
We had a two-bedroom lock-off unit, which was nice since we invited my parents to come with us. The unit was nice in size and comfortable, but not luxurious like we expected. The floors were linoleum with Formica countertops in the kitchens and bathrooms (which is fine, just not what we expected for a Gold Crown Resort).
