The Fairmont was an impressive hotel, though it's fairly far away from the airport. It had 3 large pools, a fishing pond (all poles and tackle provided), a decent gym, and great food. It's a large facility, I had to use my map to find my room. The room was very nice and the staff was friendly. The only problem was finding a lot of bogus charges on my final bill. I'm glad I didn't do a quick check-out. I didn't have a vehicle, but they had charged two nights of parking on my bill and mail service on a day I had a do not disturb sign on my room. They did fix it quickly - after I told them.
Beautiful facility but.....

The resort is really quite stunning. Fountains, citrus groves, gorgeous pools, etc. However, beware if you are staying to relax and lounge around at the pools. The resort apparently allows outside groups who are not staying there to pay to use the pools. On the days we were there, a large group of people (same group every time) came sauntering in to the pool area carrying ice chests full of Budweiser, and proceeded to blast Lynrd Skynrd from their boom box. Even the servers were annoyed and told us that they were not guests of the hotel, but they said there was nothing they could do. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Lynyrd Skynyrd per se, but come on...when I'm spending that much money at this resort, I expect a little more tranquility. For that reason, I don't think I'll stay there again.
I really question the source of positiv reviews

If you enjoy a hotel with absolutely no views this is the hotel for you. It's as if you are in New Jersey on sunny day. Gee one would think that with all the positive reviews it's a 5 star resort. Guess what it isn't. Pools are overly crowed, there is no breakfast buffet and you do not get the feeling that you are even in Arizona. Where are the mountains. In summary if you enjoy dark rooms, no views, crowded pools, enormous grounds then this place is for you
We enjoyed everything about this hotel.

The staff was so friendly and attentive. When we first arrived we were a little put off by the decor and odd shape of our room. I think it may be one they have not refurbished yet. It was clean and the bathroom was roomy. We had breakfast in The Bistro the first day because it came with a promotion. It was so excellent that we spent approx. $50 on breakfast the other days. The pools were lovely and the spa was awesome. Well worth the price of admission. I had a heavenly facial that was so much more than just a facial. The extra pampering was awesome. Be warned the bar was very pricey but sitting by the firepit outside made it a little easier to take.
Great service and amenities!

We were lucky enough to reserve a room in the resort's Gold area. It was a beautiful room -- big couch, 2 flat screens, elegant linens, huge luxurious bathroom, balcony with furniture. The Gold area gives you access to a lounge area that is gorgeous and includes a free gourmet (not just continental) breakfast, free hors d'ouerves (but honor bar) in the evening and desserts after dinner. The dedicated concierge in the Gold area was extremely helpful -- directing us to things to do and restaurants in the area.
We spent a morning at the spa, which looks to be newly renovated. It is 44,000 sq. feet. I had a great massage, then enjoyed the steam, sauna, whirlpool, cold plunge and mineral whirlpool w/ waterfall. It also has a separate outdoor pool, large fitness area with classes.
We enjoyed the Bistro restaurant, the least expensive of the choices. It isn't a low-level cafe, we enjoyed a delicious dinner and wine there. Too bad it didn't have more patrons. The outdoor bar is very chic.
The location is a little far from the airport and was hard to fine (construction on Scottsdale Blvd), but is next to a TPC golf course (privileges to resort guests). I also heartily recommend Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home, Taliesen.
I would definitely go back -- for a girls' weekend, a romantic weekend away or even a family vacation (there's a kids' club). The only downside is that it appears to cater to lots of large conventions.
