Don't Understand All These Negative Reviews!

After reading all the negative reviews on this site, I almost canceled my reservation at the St. Ann. I'm so glad I didn't now. Frankly, I don't get the complaints at all. The hotel was lovely and had a real old world charm. The courtyard was actually much nicer in reality. The room was spacious and clean. The bathroom was large and in perfect working order. You absolutely can't beat the location and price. Just try finding another hotel in the heart of the French Quarter for $55/night (weeknights). Instead of paying $80+ per night at some generic Days Inn, I got a unique bed and breakfast feel at a discount motel rate. Across the street next to the Police Station is a terrific open air Cafe that sells warm fresh baked Beignets. Maybe I'm easy to please, but I loved that you could actually OPEN the windows to get a breeze and hear the sounds of Conti and Royal Streets, though even with the windows closed the street noise is fairly loud at night. I was informed that that is common for most French Quarter hotels, since they are usually older and don't have modern sound-proof windows. One thing I noticed was that the staff has a rather blunt way of speaking. I don't think it is meant to be rude at all, just straight to the point. When you talk to them like people, not servants, they are actually very sweet and helpful. Obviously, this hotel isn't for those looking for pampering. That is clear from the price. There are plenty of pricer hotels that can satisfy that need, but if you want to save some money, you can't expect not to sacrifice something. It's more suitable for those looking to immerse themselves in the local culture and aren't planning on spending much time in their rooms. All and all, it was the perfect place for us and we will certainly be going back.

Do Not Stay Here!

Both the hotel and the room smelled badly. The room was not clean, dusty and the bathroom had mould. The rooms are small and the beds are uncomfortable. Window had to be held open with a telephone book. The staff, in contrast with the rest of the city was unhelpful and unfriendly. Service was poor. Had to order a taxi 3 times before we finally got one. Systems lacking. Were told 3 staff members got fired while we were there. BEWARE of hidden cost.

Horrible service, worse rooms

We booked rooms at this hotel for my parents and out of town guest attending a wedding celebration. Their rooms were so tiny that it required single file into the room. The toilets flushed (on their own) every 5 minutes all through the day and night. My parents have a picture of their restroom since it was absolutely ridiculous. You had stand on the toilet to reach the handle to flush. The front desk attendants were of zero assistance. They asked for air freshner to help with the horrible smell. The response from the front desk was "Why would we have any air freshner?" My friend also asked for an additional pillow and was told that they don't keep additional pillows for the hotel. Never again!

Does a bed come with this room?

We're promised two beds for four people. Our room has one bed. They promise a rollaway--four hours later, no bed. Eight hours later--no bed. Call the front desk (again!)--and we're told that the bed's been delivered. Uh...no. Try again. Delivery guy's at lunch. It's 11p.m.??? Manager calls and growls at us--for wanting a bed?!!! Don't those come standard in most hotels? Double room magically becomes available. Elevator's broken--must schlep luggage through bar and upstairs (now in pajamas, no less.) There's a knock on our door. An offer of help? Nope--a surly desk clerk angrily shoving a new key in our faces and stomping away. So, we trek through the bar, pajamas and all, lugging huge suitcases, much to the amusement of the drunks. The new room is--swear to God--50degrees. We've given up complaining at this point and just shiver. At least we got rooms--we witnessed two other couples--one holding their fully prepaid receipt--getting turned away because the hotel was overbooked. The front desk staff, instead of being helpful, was downright rude. So: paying for a room doesn't guarantee you'll get one, getting a room doesn't guarantee you'll have beds, and getting a bed doesn't guarantee it'll be clean. The location can't be beat, and the courtyard is gorgeous, but there are plenty of other hotels where you'll be treated much better and people won't make you feel like you're making an unusual request for wanting actual beds in your hotel room!
