Highly Overrated

For a hotel that is supposed to be 4 Star and a cut above, The Intercontinental doesn't make the grade. The rooms are very small and outdated, the service is poor and the price does not equal the quality. From a quality and service standpoint, the Intercontinental is not much different from a Holiday Inn. Do yourself a favor, when in Austin, choose the Hilton, Hyatt or Omni. All three are in the same price range and are much better hotels. I definitely WILL NOT stay here again.

I am from Austin and so I come back to visit as much as possible. This particular weekend my husband and I booked our room here for a VERY low rate. The Stephen F. Austin is an extremely nice hotel (as well as an Austin landmark) and I had been here many times before when I lived in Austin to enjoy drinks and the atmosphere of their "Texas style" upscale bar. However, this was my first time staying the night here and everything was wonderful. The room was cozy, comfortable and clean and the bathroom was stocked with almost anything you might need. We did not use the pool but went to check it out. It is indoors and appeared to be very private, relaxing and clean. Next to it was the weight room and we love to work out. It had everything you would need (lots of free weights). The location of the hotel is perfect, you can walk almost anywhere downtown from here but the street noise was loud so if that is something that bothers you you might be annoyed by it. I could actually hear people talk from the streets in our room several stories up so with that being said, paying regular price for this room would have disappointed me a little bit but that is because my husband and I don't have much money. A tip also for the budget travelers, you can park free at any meter spot downtown Austin on the weekends and a lot of times you'll find parking right across the street from most downtown hotels - probably not a lot of people on a budget staying here to begin with. I was just thankful that we had the opportunity to stay & enjoy another great trip to Austin!

Great place, great location and the balcony bar is not to be missed. We stayed on the 16th fl. where guests have access to the club intercontinental lounge. It's a relaxed, serve yourself bar in the afternoon from 6-8pm and a breakfast bar in the morning. It's the small details and this one went a long way with us.
You are located by everything 6th street, great restaurants (check out Jezebel's) and cool bars off the beaten path. Valet was also pretty quick.
The balcony bar was awesome. Preched among the tall trees you hardly notice from the street. It was Texas big and the prices were reassonable.
Very Disappointing

Our room was not ready when we arrived at the Intercon, so they gave us a bigger room on the smoking floor. Though the room was bigger than our original, the smell was horrible and the smoke seemed to radiate throughout the hallway as well as in the entire room! By the morning our allergies were unbearable! Our room was also missing the coffee pot, which we did not realize until the morning... AND, a half-sized bottle of water from the mini-bar was a whopping $*! Bring your own drinks! Overall, this was just a disappointing stay.
On a positive note, the hotel bar was nice and the pool/fitness center was fantastic! And the vallet service was super friendly.

"The room was lovely--clean, comfortable, well set up. The staff were absolutely delightful (and I'm difficult to please!). Great location for walking all over downtown. On free bus route."
