Description: When looking at accommodation options in Stockholm, there's quite a lot of choice. My husband and I settled on Nordic Light because there was a bit of a weekend deal on and the hotel looked fantastic - very deign oriented, young and modern. I'm glad we chose to stay there as it definitely became one of the highlight of our stays.
The reception area is open, with a cosy chill out area with fireplaces, a sleek bar and the restaurant. It's all very modern, with huge hanging lamps and modular furniture, but it's very warm and cosy too. I loved the fact that people were actually hanging out in the reception, people who weren't actually staying at the hotel. It gave the place a great, friendly buzz.
We stayed in a standard room, as opposed to a superior or deluxe mood room. The standard room was great, completely luxurious with great big bathrobes, tea and coffee making facilities and a great collection of design magazines. It was actually great to come back from a chilly walk (man is it COLD in March!), have a warm shower and a hot drink and then bundle up in a dressing gown. Very thoughtful. Everything else was in top order too - the bed was comfortable, the temperature controls let us crank up the heat, the windows kept the noise out and the curtains kept the light out. From what I can tell, the main difference between standards and the mood rooms, is the light controls - apparently you can change the mood lighting in the superior and deluxe mood rooms.
OK, and here is the probably the best thing about staying at the Nordic Light Hotel: the breakfast. Breakfast was am-a-zing. Literally the best buffet breakfast I have ever had anywhere. There is a huge range of choice, most of it healthy, all of it fresh and delicious. There was fresh-baked bread (including rye - my favourite), muffins, croissants, cheeses, hams, eggs and herring in various guises (not my thing, but my husband said they were delicious). I liked the fact that there was plenty of fresh fruits, including fruit salad, as well as berries, nuts, seeds and a selection of muesli, including spelt muesli which I'd never seen before. There was different types of yogurt and an amazing lingonberry compote. I also learned that 50% of the food is organic and they are trying to get that number higher. The coffee was also organic and also very good. We helped ourselves several times and we were full pretty much until dinner (a bonus considering how expensive food can be in Stockholm). The food is served in the bar area and there were always tables for us to sit at, even if we had to share some with other people. Local and International newspapers were also on hand, which is always a nice touch. Plus, breakfast hours are so generous, catering for early birds and people who prefer to lie in. Weekdays breakfast is served from 6:30 - 10:30, and at weekends from 7:30 - 11. This makes big change from other places we've stayed where breakfast has you setting the alarm to get to breakfast at 9 am.
As a couple we really enjoyed our stay at the Nordic Light. It's fun, modern and young and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an upbeat, but chilled out place to stay. It could also be a great place for a group of friends to stay - Saturday night and Sunday lunch time seemed especially popular times, with the lounge drawing a young, stylish crowd.
Another tip - if you're keen to try the ice bar at the Nordic Sea Hotel across the plaza, then I'd suggest booking through reception at the Nordic Lights Hotel. They're sister hotels, so when we booked our slot at the ice bar through reception we managed to get a discount, paying SEK 150 (hotel guest rate) rather than SEK 190 (telephone booking rate).
