Fairfield (now Wyndham) Elysian Beach Resort

The beach is definitely the highlight of this timeshare/hotel/resort in St. Thomas. We rented our room through Extra Holidays online for two nights and it was $175 a night. We were in Room 147 in X building - a huge climb straight up from Registration. They had a weird van/shuttle for you when you came and left, where you could load your luggage onto this open-aired pickup truck with benches and ride up the hill. Otherwise, you had to trudge up and down the road or steps—both were an exhausting climb. This is not a hotel for anyone with mobility issues of any kind. The resort is built on a cliff side and everything is either straight up or down. There is no shuttle to the upper level, but if you whine to the Registration desk, they will shake their head, roll their eyes, sigh and call the guy with the open-air pickup truck with benches in the back to take you up to your room. He expects a tip though, and you have to wait for a bit for him to get there, so we only used his services once when I just could not walk anymore. (I have a steel rod in my right leg and hip problems.) Otherwise we huffed up and down the several sets of stairs. The associate at the front desk said we should use the road, but there were no sidewalks at all and the cars barreled up and down the hill with no regard for pedestrians, so we only chanced the steep incline on foot once. Overall, we were very under-impressed with this “resort.”

The room was terrible - really small and cramped, especially for a facility known for being a timeshare. There was a small bedroom with a king-size bed, TV (poor digital reception, few channels and very hard to watch), and not much else. Nothing else would fit except a couple of tiny tables. There was a patio balcony and a small bathroom, but no whirlpool or anything like that that you usually find at a Fairfield property. The bottom of the tub was too stained for me to get a bubble bath. We got showers in the weak water pressure for the time we were there. There were plates and silverware, a microwave and refrigerator, but no stove top. There was a coffee pot and coffee cups, but no coffee, sugars, or creamers. A week's rental would be a bit of a pain in these cramped conditions even for just two. There were no dining/living rooms or any other areas with this room although they had other rooms that were more like town homes on the grounds. The Internet connection was $20 a day and once you signed up, the only place you could really get service was on the very hot and humid patio while the bugs covered you in bites.

Best Things Nearby:
There is a beach, two resturants, pools, and Jacuzzis.

Best Things About the Resort:
It's just plain beautiful, with a very nice staff.

Resort Experience:
The resort is in a beautiful setting with a landscape that is very impressive. The rooms are very spacious, with comfortable beds. The restaurant food was great - a bit high in price, but what the hell. There was a very nice and helpful staff and a lot of weekly activities.

Best Things Nearby:
By staying on the beach at the Elysian, the best thing nearby is THE BEACH. However, the Elysian also has two great restaurants - Bonnie's by the Sea and Roberts. There is no need to go far to eat, but Redhook is around the corner, with easy access to the ferry and to many great restaurants.

Best Things About the Resort:
I couldn't believe the daily maid service. We were supposed to only get maid service once a week, but the maids came every day. The views are fabulous; the staff friendly; and the location can't be beat.

Resort Experience:
The resort is located on the beach near the yacht harbor, and Red Hook is a lovely place to stay. The resort has almost all the amenities you need, including two restaurants; a swimming pool; laundry facilities; and a beach toy rental service, with sunfish, wind surfers, ocean kayaks, etc. The only thing missing is a convenience store, but then, with a rental car, you are only about 5 minutes from Red Hook.

Nice place to stay, the resort didn't have a lot of activities to do on the resort, so you have to get out to do things. There is an small beach area, but really nothing to write about, so you have to go to other beaches to enjoy. But overall, it is a nice place to stay and eat at.

Best Things Nearby:
Beach at the Ritz Carlton next door (great snorkeling), Ferry to St John in Redhook.

Best Things About the Resort:
Very clean rooms, very nice pool with a "waterfall cave" in the center.

Resort Experience:
We stayed at the Elysian Beach Resort on Cowpet Bay, St Thomas, USVI, from 9/21 until 9/28. We had to use 2 bonus weeks because we were staying midweek to midweek. The first room assigned to us had a terrible odor, musty and dank. We were given another room overlooking a large shipping container. We asked for another room and were given one that was very nice, with a view of the pool, beach and bay. The room was furnished with a small refrigerator, microwave and coffeemaker. When I noticed that there were no clothes hangers, I called the front desk for some. I made two more calls for the hangers over the next two days, and none showed up, although each time I called I was assured they would be delivered immediately. Finally, I walked over to the lobby and spoke with the assistant manager who had some hangers delivered to our room.

We did have to move on Saturday, because our unit was already assigned to someone. Our new room was fine, view was okay, but it was almost impossible to open and close the sliding door, and the sliding screen door. We probably wouldn’t have spent too much time sitting out on the balcony anyway because of mosquitoes. You definitely need to bring insect repellent with you to this island.

Having to bring our used pool/beach towels to the lobby to exchange them was inconvenient. We have stayed in other places where towels were available by the pool.

Restaurants at the resort served good food, and the bar offered great "mango-tangoes." Like most of the other restaurants on the island we dined at, the food is rather expensive for what you get.

The front desk staff was very courteous in adjusting our bill for calls that did not go through when we were trying to hook up to the internet.

We did not use any resort activities, as we rented a car and explored on our own.
