GREAT STAY ON THE HUDSON RIVER

  • August 22, 2008
  • Rated 4 of 5 by a traveler from Travelocity.com
The Thayer Hotel, located on the U.S. Military Academy (aka West Point) grounds, is a quiet, historical hotel that offers a beautiful view of the Hudson River and is a convenient launching point for touring the area. Our room was clean and well maintained and the bed was large and comfortable, however the pillows were a bit small and not up to standard for the contemporary traveler. The dining room was large and spacious and although we did not have dinner there, the breakfast buffet the next morning was a bargain. The bell captain was on duty when we checked in (10 PM) which is unusual for a "military" hotel (even having a bell man is a bit unusual on a military reservation!)

Hotel was a disappointment

Listed as Historic Landmark, this hotel is best described as "tired". While there have been some upgrades, mattresses are not good and bedding and towels are worn and gray. Staff are not particularly helpful. There were no luggage carts in sight (they are stowed across the lobby in a vestibule); when asked why this was done, staff answered it was to "keep the kids from using them as skateboards". Pretty crazy. River view also means a freight train coming through every 10 minutes throughout the night. There is a well appointed dining room and veranda, too bad the food was not very good. Breakfast buffet items were not monitored and were cold or empty! Seafood Buffet at dinner was average at best, many items of poor quality. Security is understandably tight but can become a headache and car and id's are checked when entering and leaving grounds. We used this as a base for touring the Hudson River Vallery, there is not much else available but we will not stay here again.

The Thayer Hotel

This hotel is absolutely beautiful AND expensive in the extreme. As you enter the main lobby, climb the stairs and head towards the front desk--you get the feeling as if you are walking through an ancient castle. There are suits of armor placed discreetly around the lobby, and medieval weapons and beautiful tapestries hung on the walls.

The rooms are equally as beautiful and stunning. The bathrooms are very, very large and done in a rather pale cream and white marble. The main room is furninshed in the colonial style and is truly comfortable. I have stayed here twice and have been totally satisfied with this hotel.

I was rather disappointed in the fact that this hotel does not have a on-site gym and the restaurant, while very lovely and comfortable, has an extremely lazy staff. Unfortunately as I write this I realize that many will not be able to visit this grand hotel as you must be a military ID card holder to gain access to the base.
