Beautiful Place with Paper Thin Walls!

We just returned from a 6 day visit to San Juan. We stayed at the El San Juan Hotel and Casino. The property was beautiful, the staff exemplary and the food/restaurant offerings very good. While the rooms were nice and comfortable, the walls and ceilings are literally paper thin. We could hear every conversation in the rooms next to us, the room above us and all hallway conversations. At night after the clubs closed, we were awakened frequently by people returning to their rooms, etc... This was truly the only downfall. The pool areas, bar and staff are excellent. But, you may need to catch up on your sleep poolside, as it is hard to come by at night!
The only other issue relates to failure to respond to inquiries prior to our trip. Despite 3 attempts to gain information beforehand, no one from the hotel would respond to our inquiries. This is poor business. We were relieved to find the accommodations were as reserved and there was not construction taking place during our trip.Online photos of this property are accurate.
Ritz Carlton wanna be - NOT WORTH IT!

The lobby and pool areas are absolutely gorgeous, but that's where it ends. It's like they're trying to impress people with their public spaces, but once you get to your room it's another story. Even if you've made your reservation 3/4 of a year in advance and request a certain room like a Garden Lanai, you're not guaranteed to get it. Instead you'll be "upgraded" to the tower, which in my mind was not an upgrade by any means. Our room felt hollow and echoey. We could hear everything going on around us. Also, I don't know what kind of standards their housekeeping crew has, but finding hair and a waterpark wristband in my bathtub signals to me that my bathroom wasn't even cleaned at all. Also watch out with how they apparently "hold" a certain amount on your credit card and charge you a different amount when you arrive. Kind of frustrating! It appears as though we were not the only individuals to experience this angst. We overheard other individuals in the lobby expressing the same frustration. We had a great vacation, but agreed that we would look elsewhere to stay in the future!

When my wife and I got there we were in awe over the beauty of the hotel. The staff at the check in desk were friendly and it didn't take very long to check in. We opened the door to the room and it looked just like the pictures on the internet and we had a great view of the ocean. The next day we got up and took showers and we when got out of shower we noticed a big flood in the foyer by the bathroom. We got towels out and cleaned it up and when we did we noticed mold all over the floor where the water was and all at the base of the shower, so this was an on-going problem that hadn't been fixed. Also getting out of the shower I cut the bottom of my foot on a loose tile-apparently from all of the water. I also noticed that on the tile in the sitting area(the whole room was tiled) there were either blood stains or cola stains. So the house keeper came and supposedly cleaned. When we got back that afternoon the bathroom and living area were as dirty as when we left and the stains were still there. I finally got a wet rag and cleaned it myself. THere was almost an inch of dust behind the drapes that opened to view the ocean. Add to all to this they put a family next to us with a baby and all that baby did was cry. It was so loud it was like he was in our room. Complained to no avail. Will never stay here again!!!!!
Awesome Resort!

resort is incredible. Very chic, hip, trendy. Lobby bars are really cool. Decor is some of the best I've seen. Rooms aren't quite as nice as I'd hoped or expected with the looks of the rest of the resort. Pool areas are very nice. Big comfy chairs/beds to lay around the pool. Nice beach and beach access. Chairs/beds around the pool don't provide view of beach as they are facing away from the beach. Bars and restaurants on resort are pretty expensive, but seem to be everywhere in san juan. There's some fast food, and strip malls nearby if you want to eat off resort. I suggest renting a car and exploring old San Juan. Do the BioBay excursion. Puerto Rico has three of only five glow in the dark lagoons. Very cool.

Can't say it was the nicest hotel in Puerto Rico I have ever stayed at. We normally stay at the InterContinental Hotel which is right next door but opted to stay at the ESJ because it seemed to have a great night life in the hotel lobby area. The rooms had no carpet but had tiles and the bathroom shower floor was very stained from mildew. The pool area was gross. The "new" revamped chaise lounges were filthy and also full of mildew. There is no way for them to dry out and so the hotel is forced to try and cover them with white cotton covers. Half of the time only 1/3 of the chaises were covered and the pool staff didn't do much but lounge around and talk among themselves. Next year when we return we will not be staying here.
