just returned from a 6 night stay at the el san juan june 22nd to 28th. Unlike the previous reviews I must say that both my fiance and I really enjoyed the hotel. The rooms were nice and I felt that they were clean. The hotel lobby area had a very rich look of mahogany wood all throughout, and was quite trendy. Very nice sunken in bar at the center of lobby as soon as you walk in with the Casino to the right. Ate at Kocos and the Japanese restaurant and was surprised by the quality of the sushi. Pool area was beautiful as well as a nice stretch of beach which I ran in the mornings before breakfast. Pool and beach areas my favorite...wallgreens two blocks away which is nice. Chillis accross the street if you really want. Also two really good restaurant for traditional food right near by 3 to 5 minute walk...Platos and Metropol...oh and def checkout Raises restaurant in old san juan...By the way we are 30yrs old. Gets packed with locals friday and saturday nights and always live music...

The worst place I have ever stayed!

I just returned from a weeks stay at the El San Juan Hotel and Casino and I wouldn't stay here again if you paid me! I booked 2 rooms online and received my confirmations. When we arrived they had already put the full amount on hold, that would have been due at check out. I explained this to the clerk at check in and he still ran my bank card again which resulted in a third hold for a total of over $. I had to call my bank and let them talk with the assistant manager and she had them release one hold. I have NEVER had a hotel put the full amount on hold before you check out. They also attempted to charge me higher rates than what I had received confirmation for. I told this to 3 different people at the desk who all assured me that it had been corrected. We went to check out and the rates were still incorrect. I am still trying to get this corrected, even after my return home. The room we booked online had a balcony with view of gardens and pool but we were given a room with nasty view of what looked like an old parking lot. The room also should have had a walk in closet and full bathroom with 2 sinks but we had a tiny bathroom with only a nasty shower and one sink. Rooms never looked clean and the carpet in the hallway looks like it is 50 years old and never been cleaned! Rooms have paper thin walls and people partying all night. Told security but didn't help. Pool chair cushions are nasty and busting out at the seams. Most of the staff were rude and indifferent. No customer service at all!

Used to be great, not anymore

Used to be a great hotel, not anymore. I used stay in this hotel every year I when back to Puerto Rico. I was so disappointed with my last visit last June (2008)t. A lot of changes, for the worst. Starting with the ugly front desk staff uniform to the dirty water in the pool. This used to be a very classic and elegant hotel, now its just ugly and dirty.

Terrible experience...

Do not waste your money on this hotel - you will be very disappointed!! The lobby is beautiful, but the rooms look nothing like the website. Our room was old, musty and dirty. The staff was rude. Everything is way over-priced for the quality that you receive. If you are planning a trip to San Juan Puerto Rico; then stop by the hotel lobby for an evening, but DO NOT stay here!

Aweful Resort!

Stop! Do NOT waste your money on this hotel. It is not a resort if that is what you are looking for. Our room was not ready until after 6pm on check-in. We tried to have the hotel hold our baggage and go to the pool, but we soon realized we were not the only guests waiting for a room. The luggage room was overpacked that the bags were layed out in the lobby and the pool was at maxium capacity. The customer service was among the worst I have every experienced. They are not friendly, supportive, or helpful in any situation. The food is overpriced. The rooms were filthy dirty. The cleaning service deliberately placed our belongs on the floor. Sheets, towels, and bars of soap were reused. Careful when walking out to the pool you don't step on the cigarrette buds. They litter the place. It's an overall dirty, and overpriced hotel. You can complain to management, but it doesn't get you anywhere. Recommend leaving early in the morning to get a spot poolside. It often fills up and is overcrowded with children by 10 am. About the only positive thing I can say is that the lobby is beautiful, but looks can be deceiving. We will never go back.
