Very nice hotel

I just returned to Atlanta on 6-12-09 from San Juan PR. The hotel was great, we upgraded to oceanview for additional $***. The room was very clean and the beds were very comfortable. The food is expensive, never thought that I would end up spending almost $20 on every meal at a fast food restaurant for 2 people (unbelivable) for a small burger, fries or onion rings and 2 bottled waters. I could have eaten at decent restaurant like Chili's, TGIF, Bahama Breeze, Olive Garden etc. for less than that here in the states, but other than the pricy food, the overall trip was very good. Mostly overcast, it did rain on Thursday and Friday, but not long. Old San Juan is definitely worth the money I paid to tour it. My 18 year old niece enjoyed it as well. This was her HS graduation from me (her auntie). The cab fees were ridiculous, it cost me $40 to go to and from the Las American Mall because we were advised that the buses did not go to the mall. I found that very hard to believe. The buses will take you to Old San Juan area, so if you visit please take the bus and not a taxi. The bus only cost 75 cents and the taxi cost $20. Old San Juan is very beautiful and you can get some great photos. Also, be sure to tour the San Cristobal Fort (very interesting history). The pool and beach at the hotel were very clean, but the restaurant near the pool had too many black birds walking around the cooking area and we did not eat there because of that and the prices were too high. I think the cheapest item was an $11 burger. Overall, the trip was good.
Great hotel

All the staff did everything possible to make our stay wonderful. The room was comfortable and very clean. The concierge was honest and gave us fun ideas on what to do and where to eat. The beach was beautiful, clean and safe. There is a public beach entrance a little ways down the beach, so there are many Puerto Rican families that come to enjoy the ocean, particularly on the weekends. There are plenty of restaurants and places to visit nearby. The bus to Old San Juan passes right in front of the hotel. The hotel was very family friendly and had several kid-friendly activities each day. Unlike other Caribbean destinations, there is no public nudity in Puerto Rico. We booked a great deal on online travel website and chose the cheapest option at the Intercontinental, which turned out to be a room facing the street with a view of the bay. At check-in, we were given the option to upgrade to an ocean or pool view room at an additional charge, but chose not to. The Intercontinental is located in the city right off of a main street, so there is some traffic noise. The airport is only a few miles away so there is noise from the planes also. It generally wasn't a problem for us and wouldn't be a problem at all in an ocean or pool view room.
Much needed get away

My family and I needed our vacation very badly and our stay at the Intercontinental was exactly what the doctor ordered. A most amazing hotel, the grounds are beautiful, beaches were stunning. We arrived mid afternoon and very soon after, the stress was already starting to wane. When we checked in, we asked for a change of room layout and we were immediately accommodated. We had the most perfect view from our top floor balcony, directly onto the ocean and over the lagoon pool. The hotel was very clean and quiet, and the staff very helpful. The concierge gave good recommendations (except for one dinner) and the doormen were immediately available for getting taxis and giving directions. We were disappointed with the casino ? it was small and we did not like the attitude of the customer service there. Keep in mind that the hotel does not have an ATM anymore, it is done thru the casino, so we went across the street to an ATM.
For food: at the hotel the beverages are costly but the bar staff is very friendly and the food is also fairly expensive but good. The Mi Casita across the street is great for a quick cheap meal ;we ate there twice; and there are many other local places to eat. At the hotel we enjoyed Alfredos, and the hibachi resturaunt. Off the property we enjoyed Lupi?s; down the street past the ESJ hotel; Brother Jimmy?s BBQ at the ESJ, The Palms at the ESJ. In Old San Juan we loved a hole in the wall called El Parnaso on Cristo Street.
Try the parasailing from the company just down the beach. My daughter had a wonderful first experience and they were very friendly. Overall, an EXCELLENT vacation. Would definitely stay here again!
Great Hotel!

Having two restaurants available at the pool/beach was really great-most places only have one. We ate lunch at both and they were both excellent. One has views of the pool, the other is right on the beach so you can watch the waves. The spagetti carbonara at Alfredo's is not to be missed, and they welcomed us with a bit of champagne and ended the meal with a complimentary Limencello. We had a late flight home and they provided us with a full hotel room, with towels, toiletries, and even a coffeemaker for a half hour at no charge. It is called the "hospitality room" and I have never had that at other hotels ( usually you just get a locker and locker room facilities). The morning water aerobics, yoga, and dance classes were great. The casino was fun and had five dollar craps and twenty-one. The only down side was that Starbucks is in the lobby of the hotel next door instead of this lobby, and that the fitness center ( which was very nice, overlooking the ocean) did not have headphones available.

Recently we had our second visit to the Intercontinental,San Juan,PR. We
booked our trip through a Yahoo travel site. Our trip was postponed 2 days due
to a snow storm in the Atlanta area. I immediately notified the hotel directly
about the weather circumstances beyond my control and inquired about a
credit or extending my stay 2 more days in exchange for the 2 days we lost. I
contacted several managers at the hotel and got nowhere. They refused to give me
any credit or any consideration for our situation. The on line travel website was also
unsuccessful in trying to negotiate.
I had to add two days extra at my own expense. I'm not happy that the hotel
refused to credit me those lost 2 days even though it was due to weather
circumstances beyond my control. Also, when I added the additional 2 days, no one
let me know that I would be charged 2.5 times the resort fee due to the
higher room rates. I paid $*/day for the "resort fees" for the additional 2 days
as opposed to $*/day "resort fee" I was charged for the first 3 days. When
I inquired at the front desk that said that the resort fee was a % based on
your room rate.
In summary, it is a shame that such a beautiful hotel with excellent staff
has management that is only interested in "sticking it to you" whenever money
is involved.
Unfortunately,we will not return to this hotel and it is not due to the
staff but due to poor management!
