Helpful and friendly staff from check in to check out. Great location made it very easy to use as a central point to travel all over the city using cabs or subways. Will definitely stay here again.
The perfect place

We spent a happy week at the Algonquin and we would return in a heartbeat. The large, welcoming lobby lounge is a wonderful respite from the bustle of NYC. Plenty of overstuffed chairs, sofas, and cozy little groupings make for a wonderful spot to stop and rest with a glass of wine and a nosh. On Sunday night, they had open mike night and the talent was quite incredible. I imagine this is a regular occurrence there as the lobby was packed.
Our room, with king sized bed, was quiet, spacious and very comfortable. With the bay window and window seat, and plenty of room to move around, we felt right at home. We could have spent our entire week in the hotel happily but we had theater tickets to four productions and they were only a matter of blocks away. We were warned that the rooms could be quite small as the hotel dates back to the early 1900s and in the case of smaller bed size, that is likely the case. Still, it is a charming hotel, beautifully located, delicious food--what more could one ask?
Definitely worth the price

The Algonquin is perfect - less than 2 blocks from Times Square or 5th Avenue, 2-3 blocks from the Subway or Grand Central Station, 6 blocks from Rockefeller Center, St. Patricks Cathedral, and Radio City. 4 blocks from Sardi's, John's Pizzeria, Carmine's, and The Majestic Theatre (Phantom). We took a cab to 52nd to have dinner at the 21 Club ($6 bucks plus tip) and used the subway for everything else. The hotel is quaint and shows traditional charm but is clean and very up to date. Hotel is full of brass, marble and dark wood for a rich upscale experience. The room was about the size of a medium/large bedroom with a high ceiling, modern furniture, bay window and extremely comfortable bed. The entire hotel is on the smaller scale (small hallways, staircases, elevators) but is full of early 1900 traditional accents and architecture that you don't care about the size because it's a period hotel. The service is absolutely excellent. There is a popular diner called the Red Flame just 2 doors down which is great for breakfast ($8.95 for a full breakfast including coffee) and you can't miss it. They sell bottled water for $1.50, or street vendors sell it for $1. The room has no fridge or coffee pot (not really big enough to fit anything else without making it crowded) but we were perfectly fine with it. If you're looking for a great NY experience without a huge price this is perfect - 4 star hotel without the pricetag. Bathtubs are European style - very deep and narrow sides so ask about this if you're handicapped. My mom is 70 and did fine though with the handrail. Free internet and 1 small bottled water each day.

We were quite pleased with our weekend stay at The Algonquin. The hotel has a great (and well-deserved) sense of history and it's pretty much right in the middle of everything. The staff was attentive and courteous.
Problems were few and relatively minor. It took us about half an hour to get extra towels delivered to our room (after we had tried to just get them from the front desk directly and were told they had to be delivered by a staff member). The security bolt on the room door was in need of some maintenance and the bathtub drain was a little finicky, but other than that our room was in great condition.
The room itself was a bit crowded (mostly due to the size of the bed), but it had been recently updated and it was more than adequate for the needs of most travelers.
I would have no hesitation in booking a room there again the next time I return to New York.
Great place to stay

Super nice staff. We had a suite that was very large. The bed was the most comfortable bed we had ever slept in. The location was within walking distance of everthing we wanted to see or do.
