Legoland is across the street. Seaworld is about a twenty minute drive and The Wild Animal Park is a half hour away. DisneyLand is 50 minutes away.
Best Things About the Resort:
There are flower fields that bloom in March that I'm sure look very beautiful, and there is a mini water park in the pool area that kids would enjoy.
Resort Experience:
We visited this resort over Christmas vacation of 2001. After a nearly 15 hour trip door to door, we arrived at the resort at 5:30 p.m. only to find out our room was not ready, which was unfortunate. It was about 45 minutes until we were able to occupy the room.
The resort is in a great location, right next to LegoLand in the town of Carlsbad The rooms are new and spacious, but don't have jacuzzis. We (as most exchangers do) had a room facing the parking lot, which proved to be extremely noisy since there is a restaurant/bar on the other side of the lot that people frequent until very late at night. We could hear cars screeching around constantly. The other side of our unit looked out over the family pool, which could also get quite noisy when it was fully occupied.
The first morning when we woke up and opened one of our kitchen cabinets, it was completely ant infested. We're talking a black wall of ants! It was pretty gross. They gave us a choice of moving to a less-desirable unit or exterminating, and we decided to go for the exterminating since moving would have been a pain. They did a good job and no ants came back, but they did say they had been having an ant problem at the resort. It made us a lot more wary of buying and storing groceries in the unit, and even eating in the unit.
The management did care very much about our situation, and had housekeeping do a thorough cleaning for us after the extermination. They also gave us two adult tickets to LegoLand. So, even though we were pretty grossed out by all those ants, at least they took steps to remedy the problem.
It wasn't really swimming weather (mid 60s) but the resort has a large family pool (they also have a separate adults-only pool) and a little water "play-area" that has spinning water wheels and other fun things for kids. There is also a hot tub next to the pool. Our kids did swim one day, and there were others that did venture out to swim...one family at 10:00 one night, which is how I know that the pool area can get really noisy! They had a nice game room and arcade that my 10 year old spent a lot of time in!
The resort was unfortunately very understaffed and everyone seemed pretty stressed out, including the concierge. It may have been because they had a big wedding planned for that weekend there, but I think they do weddings all the time.
I think I would only stay at this resort again if I had an ocean view room, which would make the room away from the parking lot! There are many resorts to choose from in this area, fortunately!
