Tried to book a King spectacular view room online and was assigned a spectacular view Queen. Called immediately and was told, no problem our account was annotated and the switch to a King would made at check-in. Checked-in and was put in a queen. The room was dirty, the A/C didn't work and the only chair was dirty and actually thread baren. The spectacular view was through dirty windows without curtain or drapes, just old fashioned crooked pull down shades. Ask for a room change and was told they had nothing available. All this for a Starwood prefered guest at the Gold Level.

First of all my room key did not work and in order for me to get back and forth into my hotel room that i spent a lot of money for i had to keep calling security, secondly, the room was HOT!!! the fan nor AC worked and the sweat was dripping down my back as i tried to get ready and lastly the service was horrible. After the second time my key did not work i went down to the check-in counter and spoke with someone behind the counter who was no help. They told me i could get my money because i prepaid and that i could not be switched to another room because they were all "booked". I asked to speakkwith management and of course the girl behind the desk calls and would not let me speak to the manager directly but of course all of a sudden another room was available. Then to top things off they hold money on your credit for incidentials for 5 days until you call them and have them fax something to your credit card company. It was a horrible night and a horrible stay. I do not recommend it to any one.
A Disappointing W Experience

While this hotel was not awful, it by no means compares to other W hotels or similar boutique hotel brands. When I first read other traveler reviews, I suspected that perhaps those travelers had not know what to expect from NYC hotels, where it is quite common for the rooms to be very tiny and darkness is a part of setting the ambiance. However, the rooms were not just tiny but very poorly designed. Our alleged Queen-size bed was at most a Full, and a huge desk that served absolutely no purpose took up half the room. Rather than maximize the space with a flat screen TV, they had a TV from 1995 that took up the other half of the room. My husband and I barely fit in there, and forget trying to open our (small) suitcases at the same time. The lobby bar scene is lively, but there is a wait nearly every evening for the elevators. An actual line forms while people await for an elevator car to finally return to the lobby, and then guests cram like sardines into the elevators while trying to access their floors by first inserting their room cards into the an access slot in the elevator. Of course, the cards fail to work nearly half the time. It is also true that the heat is kept at unbearably high temperatures during winter. Our room overlooked a parking lot, and it was so claustrophobic that we did whatever we could to not have to return until the last possible moment. Also, the hotel restaurant is closed during weekends, so good luck if you'd like a meal on a Saturday or Sunday. The W The Court and W The Tuscany are about five blocks away, and the rooms are twice as large.

I was told what a nice hotel this was. Our room was only slightly larger than a queen bed. Had to pass sideways thru a partition from the foyer to the bed area. no dresser, only a small ledge going down 1 side of wall, which left about 17" to get by, a small ledge desk, no lite, poor liting thruout, couldn't read the print on the a/c which was recessed in the vent, the "engineer" had to use a flashlite to see it. 2 small lites over the bed, not enough to read by. very depressing decor - taupe everything. bathroom more like one on a cruise ship.
1 dirty desk chair and an ottoman. It's geared for "healthy" living but you had to pass thru 1/2 doz. smokers at the front entrance.wouldn't go back if it was the only hotel available.
4 Star Whatever

When the Marriott across the street looks more appealing, you have to wonder who is giving the W properties the 4 Star rating.
I checked in to a smoky smoking floor which I did not request. The room was about 100 square feet and the entire floor reeked. Besides the stench and the size, the paint was peeling from the ceiling, wallpaper falling off the walls and cigarette burns in the carpet. We were given a bigger room on a non-smoking floor, which was kind of the manager, however, there is no turn down service, something typical of 4 star hotels and a hot water issue. The incredibly loud ice machine in the hallway did not work and the room service trays sat in the hallway all day long. For a city with a roach problem, I couldn't believe they would allow food stuff to sit that long. But then again, the wallpaper and carpets outside the rooms resembled the interiors.
I polled several guests over the two days I stayed here and all of them called the hotel "run down", "tatty", "overpriced" and "definitely not 4 Star".
I will say the W Union Square is fabulous, but this original W is what I would imagine staying at a Comfort Inn on the outskirts of Detroit would be.
