Description: One of the delightful things about ski-ing in North America was the quality of the accommodation. It's not that European accommodation is bad, just that there seem to be more mod cons in accommodation in Canada & US because that’s what customers expect. It’s funny how little things like a coffee maker, microwave, and dishwasher improve the quality of your life. Satellite TV was also a plus for us as a couple, spending a couple of cosy nights in nursing my bruises from snowboarding, and monitoring the weather on the Weather Channel. Watching the Weather Channel to know what to take with us for a day’s skiing was how we learnt it was minus 47C one morning!
Wanting self-catering, Douglas Fir Apartments seemed the closest option to Banff, although ‘close’ is a different concept in a society used to cars. Ironically, with all the free transport included with your lift pass, you have no need for a car to go skiing, yet much of the accommodation was designed with car users in mind. It was a good 20 minute slog up a gentle hill from Banff town to our cabin. Thankfully the resort buses pick up from just outside all the accommodation. So you only have to walk to shop, or eat out.
My advice for any accommodation is read the description carefully. As a couple we were about to book a 1 bedroom apartment, until we read in the brochure that the bedroom was in fact the sitting room and the bed a sofa bed. With a 2 week holiday, we opted to pay £50 more for a ‘proper’ bed and bedroom.
