Overpriced - staff on strike

  • May 11, 2009

If you are used to traveling in Europe staying at cheap hotels, you will find the experience here similar. The building is rundown. The service is perfunctory. The food mediocre. If I were paying $** for the experience I would say it was a good deal. FYI - the staff has been on strike for 6 years so you will have to cross a picket line to get in the front door.

Chicago's Congress Plaza Hotel

Staying at the Congress Plaza Hotel was one of the best travel experiences of my life. Sadly, I only stayed in the hotel for one night but I will be staying there anytime I go to Chicago from now on. The staff were helpful, friendly and full of knowledge of the rich and diverse history of the beautiful hotel. Two different security guards offered to take us on a tour of the property and showed us the beautiful ballrooms and different areas of the hotel. They even showed us some of the closed off spaces and told us some fun and interesting ghost stories about the place. Our room was clean and spacious mixing old world style with new age accommodations. The reason I am writing this review is from doing some research and finding many negative reviews of the hotel which I believe are propaganda because of the on going strike. The reviews say the hotel is falling apart with rats and pests everywhere, with an unfriendly and unhelpful staff. I saw a lot of the hotel during my stay and did not notice any of this. I am not an architectural expert but I did not notice any disrepair in the hotel. If it is true that the hotel is falling apart to the point of condemnation someone needs to do something about it immediately. It would be a tragedy to lose another beautiful historic landmark that displays Chicago's fascinating and spectacular past.

Great Stay - Character and Classy

We had a wonderful stay; our room overlooked the lake - was clean and the bed was very comfortable. We stayed for 4 nights and consistently had good service from ALL staff members. We ate several meals in the restaurant, all of which were incredible from service to quality of food. Would stay again in a heart beat. Located on few blocks from the Art Institute and in the spring then the walks on the lake front would be wonderful. The hotel and staff are a statement of class and character.

Good Location

This hotel was located in a great spot on Michigan Ave, we were close to everything. We arrived at 8:30 am thinking we would have to check our bags and wait to check into the room until check-in at 3 pm, but our room was ready and we were able to check-in early! The room was clean and nicely furnished. The layout of the room was great; we had a king bed and a full bed conjoined by a hallway that the bathroom was on; it was almost as though we had 2 seperate rooms. There was some paint chipping around the door frames of the closets and bathroom. The beds were very comfortable. The only issue we had was that the room smelled strongly of fresh plaster, almost to the point of giving us headaches. All staff were friendly and gave us ideas for tourist activities. I would definately stay here again. P.S if you visit the hotel bar, don't play songs on the juke box, it sometimes eats your money.

Keep Looking

Stayed at the Congress for a wedding, but wouldn't go back. Not much to do at the hotel itself. Good location to stroll around downtown. No heat or air conditioning controls, just fan controls. Most of the staff was friendly and curteous. Parking was a little expensive. Got overcharged for the room, but caught the mistake and had a credit put back on my card. For the price you pay and what you get in return, I would look elsewhere - very disappointed!
