NEEDS FURTHER UPGRADES

  • July 31, 2008
  • Rated 3 of 5 by a traveler from Travelocity.com
A fine older building from the earlier 20th century with marvelous detail that is deserving of top notch room renovations. Current furnishings seem to have come from a second hand store, the window treatments are seriously outdated, and the bathroom "upgrades" were at best a second rate effort. On the plus side, the upper floors on the front side of the building yield a thoroughly satisfiying view overlooking grant park and out into the lake.

Stayed here twice. In February & April. Got lakefront view, king bed rooms. 12th floor February, 9th floor April. Good price for Chicago and the location. Both rooms were spaceous with great views out over Lake Michigan and up and down Michigan Ave.. Both were slightly dilapidated with an older, past its prime elegance. Both were noisy ALL night Saturday but both were quiet Sunday and the weekdays. Both had large flatscreen t.v.'s. I will stay here again though I'll bring earplugs if it's a weekend.

How could it be this bad?

In brief, this was the worst hotel I've stayed in in 10 years. I travel a moderate amount, and this was really below par. For example: Upon checking in the room was chilly. I called the front desk to ask how to turn the heat on and was told, "it's been turned off for the season." So I turned on the hair dryer for the next hour. The next morning I went downstairs for a cup of coffee. When I went back upstairs, my key didn't work, so I went back down, got a replacement, and went back up at which point it didn't work either (trip 2). So I went back down and they called security. We went up together (trip 3) and his key didn't work. He told me 'we' had to get the electrician. So me and the electrician went back up and he said 'your key is bad'. '. Seemed impossible, but down we went to get yet another one and up I went (trip 5) and it finally worked. What did they give me to compensate for my coffee getting cold and FIVE trip up and down at 7 am? Nothing. The room had 2 60 watt bulbs, period. If you like it dark, it's perfect for you. The tub drain was clogged. Despite me mentioning it directly to the housekeeping staff, they did NOTHING about it, and this morning I took a (another) shower in ankle-deep gray water. The shower head had about half of the openings clogged so it took 5 minutes to rinse out may hair. But this was actually a good thing, otherwise the tub would have overflowed from the clogged drain. Time to sell to Hilton or Marriott.

positive review among mostly bad ones

I stayed 2 nights. Our room was overlooing Michigan Lake and the view was great! It had a very confortable kingsize bed .It was thoroughly clean .We had a flat screen Tv, coffee making facilities and very little noise in the corridor early in the morning compared to the Westin where I stayed at christmas . Doors would keep banging from 6 o'clock in the morning !!! Of course ,people staying there were more businesslike than the people we came across in the congress plaza but I never felt unsecure in the hotel premisces. The staff was friendly ,efficient and gave reliable information. Our luggage was kept free of charge in a locked room after check out for us to go on visiting until it was time to get our bus back home.

Congress Plaza - what happened?

  • March 30, 2008

This would have been an excellent hotel 30 years ago. Rooms were severely dilapidated and current rennovation was shoddy. I found plaster/paint on the carpet, peeling wallpaper, plaster hanging down from the ceiling and black mildew on the tile grout in the bathroom. I will not stay there again until restoration is completed and completed by skilled workers. The room service food was not worth the money and was 1/2 hour late - probably why the food wasn't hot. On a positive note, I found the staff to be friendly, courteous and helpful.
