Description: I have been to San Diego several times for conventions and conferences but the last two times, I've stayed here at the Gaslamp Plaza Suites in the downtown area of the city. It did not disappoint on this visit.
Gaslamp Plaza Suites is actually a timeshare resort, available to those who have purchased here or used an exchange network like RCI or II to trade into this location. It is also available through their property management company VRI, which is how I booked my four night stay. At $113+ tax/night for a queen suite, it was a bargain when compared to other hotels in the block with the conference I was attending (starting at $155+tax/night).
The queen suite was a large suite style room, with the bedroom in one area of the room, separated loosely by a desk and the sleeper sofa. There were also a couple of chairs, a nice upright dresser with TV, and a small area for limited meal prep. A full complement of dishes and silverware was provided in the room, along with a microwave, mini-fridge and a sink.
Add the full bathroom with O2 toiletries, I could not have asked for better or more complete accommodations for the price paid.
The building is an old restored location, listed in the National Historic Registry. They were able to retain much of the original features of the building including the marble walls and the old antique style mail box on the lobby level.
Also in this building is the Melting Pot (see separate review). During my last visit, they had a steak place here but the owner chose to close that restaurant and purchase a franchise with the national fondue dining chain. While I thoroughly enjoyed Dakota's on my last trip here, I was pleased to have a unique option like Melting Pot.
For those considering this location, be advised that the resort is about six blocks from the convention center. I found the leisurely morning walk to be nice. In the afternoon, the walk up the slight uphill inclined was a bit exhausting after a full day of hoofing around the convention center but it was bearable.
The resort does not have your typical resort amenities like a swimming pool or on-site activities. No worries, however, because you can book excursions from the resort to local tourist attractions such as SeaWorld, The San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Coronado and even Los Angeles/Hollywood.
More like a hotel, however, they do provide a complimentary continental breakfast (7-10a) and daily housekeeping services.
I will always look to book here when travel plans for work or pleasure bring me to San Diego.
