shabby cheap

Rooms were way too small, shabby but definitely not chic. Chairs and lampshade had stains on them. Noisy at night, gave us double when we asked for King bed. Beds are too hard. Concierge was distant.

Close to the Heart

I love SF, and now, so does my family. I've stayed in this area of the city, but the Monaco felt more intimate and special than some of the options. It's a lovely place, staffed with colorful friendly people. Wine & cheese was fun, but needed a little more seating; make sure you check out full spectrum of room types - our rooms were great, but we would have opted for more suite-like accomodations had we known they were available.

Best Bet Around Union Square

We loved The Monaco. We've stayed in three of the Kimpton Hotels around Union Square, and it's the best. The neighborhood is a little seedy to the south and west, but it doesn't feel unsafe. If you value your time and want to have a memorable weekend around shopping and everything else in SF, this is the place. Also, the public transit connections are great on Market Street. And if you need to rent a car, all of the majors are within a block or two.

Excellent Hotel

The Hotel Monaco is suburb and the beautiful decor is excellent for inside photos, The in room snack bar is over priced as well as the hotel parking. Next door parking is $20. 24/7. Location is excellent for walking to Union Square and public transportation. All hotel service personel were speedy and very polite. San Francisco is a great city, without all the Wal-marts and fast food. However dining can be very expensive.I hope to visit Hotel Monaco again.

Home away from home

The pictures do not do the hotel justice. It is beautiful! Just a quick walk and you can get any where in the city with ease. If you need help figuring out how to get some place the staff will be more then accomodating. I definitely recommend staying at Hotel Monaco as you will not regret it. We even spent Memorial Day weekend there and the hotel was so quiet. The rooms are very romantic and you'll never want to leave once you arrive.
