Property as worn out as its theme, this hotel is an outrageous ripoff, considering what it actually delivers: Mildewed bathrooms and plain, unimpressive rooms. The point of staying in a boutique hotel is personal service, but with the exception of the concierge desk, the staff is sloppy at best, and the front desk is more interested in charging you for every little thing than making you feel welcome. At this price level, the Intercontinental and the Hilton offer much nicer rooms, views and service.

Gordon House Hotel

I stayed at the Gordon House Hotel in November 2005. I really enjoyed my 2 night stay here. The hotel has an excellent location in Colaba (South Mumbai), not far from the Gateway of India.

The hotel has different themes for each of the floors. My room was on the Mediterranean floor. It was fairly spacious, clean and nicely appointed. The bathroom was somewhat small, but was pretty clean too. They provided a full set of complimentary toiletries. The complimentary slippers, daily bottle of water, and ironing of clothes were nice touches. The breakfast buffet was quite good and offered both Continental and Indian dishes. The concierge was friendly and very helpful. All this for Rs 4000, which I think is steep for India but not too steep for Mumbai. Mumbai has some of the steepest rates in India. I think for what you get, the rates are maybe just 25-30% cheaper than hotels in NYC. When hotel shopping in India, always ask for a discount. I will definitely come back to Gordon House... hopefully they will have figured something out about the night-club noise.

Ah, the night club. Polly Esther's. I had read reviews on the Internet and was therefore aware of the night-club on the 1st floor. I requested a room on one of the upper floors. But there wasn't one available. However, they said the room they are going to give me is on the side with less noise.

My room was on the second floor and had no view to mention of, but I must say I was spared from the loud music. I definitely could not hear it over the hum of the air-conditioning unit. I did however overhear another guest complain of the noise. So I guess the key is to get a room that is on a higher floor or that is on the side with less noise intrusion.

The Gordan House Hotel

The Gordan House is just a skip away from India Gate, and is a wonderful little hotel. The staff and facilities are very nice. The rooms come with TVs, sounds systems, and VCD players. It is a very nice room and the finest I had in India.

This is the perfect place to stay for someone who has not been to India before. It is a bit of western calmness in the a sea of busy Mumbai. Rooms have working showers, are neat and bright, and the staff is always ready to help. Breakfast is included and is in the All Stir Fry. It is a nice mix of Japan meets China, and the food is good. Again, it is very air-conditioned, and when entering from outside feels frozen. There is a nightclub and the room that my friends were in was rocking with the oldies, so ask the desk for a room away from the disco! It is that, or sing along with the disco. That is what my friends did. From the hotel, you can walk with care to the India Gate and the Albert Art Museum, which is very nice but not air-conditioned. Lots of folks will offer you rides, and many other things, but if you are firm and polite, and not alone (alone is not a good thing near India Gate as the hawkers seems to pounce on singles) you will be OK with just walking from Gordan House to these places. If you want a nice place to stay by India Gate, this is it!

Great Value for money. This is a unique boutique hotel managed by the owners of a leading chain og fine dining restaurants.

The 3 floors in this hotel are based on three different themes. Scandinavian, Mediteranean and Country cottage themes.

The Coffee Shop is really worth visiting even if one is not staying there.
