This is an old hotel which was opulent in it's time. The suite with the glass doors provides privacy - important when traveling with family. Our teen stayed up watching TV while we were able to sleep without being disturbed. Mattress was on the hard side and bedspread was very heavy on my feet. No light blanket was provided. Marble bathroom was small but OK. Airconditioning was outstanding - I like it COLD when I sleep and I was able to get that by putting the thermostat on low instead of high. Don't know why.
Breakfast was served in a very nice wood panneled room but there was only ONE overworked and irritable lady staffing the dinning room! She took the reservation, seated you, then incredibily COOKED the breakfast at a buffet like table. I've never seen anything like it. She was cooking in a suit. The choices were 16.50 for a breakfast of bread, cereal and juice or 20 for EVERYTHING.
The concierge is very capable and looked just like George Clooney.
Many good restaurants nearby and Nat His Museum is close.
One big complaint I have is the mini bar. DO NOT touch it. It has a device on it that charges you (outrageous sums) if you even MOVE an item. When I went in I cautioned our teen not to get anything from the bar but but it has a snack tray on the top with nuts temptingly displayed. I thought I'd move the nuts where they couldn't be seen then for some reason I didn't. Good thing because back in the bedroom was a note card saying if anything on the snack bar was removed for 20 seconds you were billed for it. It left me with the feeling the hotel was desparate.

Central Park Dream

One of my goals was to spend time explioring Central Park so this hotel was excellent. We were upgraded to a suite so I was very happy about that! It was a lovely room. The bathrooms were large and gorgeously decorated in a floral tile motif. Only one little gripe, there was never hot water, but since it was mid summer and we were on the top floor, it was not a huge issue. I like historic hotels so this really fit the bill for me. We used the subway to go everywhere so getting around was no problem. I really liked the Excelsior!!

Picky and difficult to satisfy travelers read this...
I researched my vacation to NYC for several months and read many traveler reviews on several hotels and still no hotel stood out. I was so worried to pick the wrong hotel and/or in a bad location. The Excelsior Hotel surpassed my expectations by far. The hotel staff was very friendly and eager to assist travelers. The hotel was located in the Upper West Side of Manhattan across the street from Central Park and The Museum of Natural History. A Subway Line is located across the street for easy travel , Starbucks Coffee around the corner and cheap taxi fares to Times Square. I was very pleased with the large size hotel room and bathroom. The room was clean, nicely decorated and very cozy. I truly enjoyed the hotel's atmosphere and it's location in the city. I highly reccomend The Excelsior Hotel to anyone visiting "The Big Apple"!

Superb Location

Clean hotel , clean rooms, rooms a little small but werent in it that much. Was on seventh floor and was quiet. Museum grounds were across street. Staff was friendly, doorman more than accomadating flagging down cab, Only complaint had only one computer for guests to use to access internet was busy often. Printed out boarding passes and sign said there would be a charge of 25 cents per page using printer which was at service desk backroom but desk clerk never charged us saying thanks for staying with us no charge.
Had late flight after checkout, bell captain very accomodating in keeping bags while we were out and about.
Starbucks and Uno pizza block from hotel. About a dozen restaurants ( many of them with outdoor eating) north on Columbia a block west of hotel .Pharmacy and many local grocery stores within for blocks. One block from Central Park, Museum, and subway.
Definetly would stay again.

No heat, no problem.

Great location, beautiful, clean. However, if you like to control the temperature of your room or the temperature of your showers, then find another hotel. Apparently in New York, a three star rating does not come with the fancy amenities like hot air and water.
In the shower, hot water does not last longer than 2 minutes in the morning. Your only chance at a continuously warm shower is after 8pm.
There is a heater/cooler unit with a dial, so ostensibly, you can control room temperature and have a heater that satisfies whatever local laws may be in place requiring such things. However, when you set it to "Heat," because you are cold, it blows warm air for only about 10minutes out of every 30 minutes, and spews COLD AIR the rest of the time.
So once again, as long as you don't mind taking a hot shower or turning on the heater and getting COLDER, this is a great hotel.
To make this criticism constructive, I would advise that hotel management invest in heaters that blow hot air, and hot showers that flow with hot water. Continuously.
