We stayed for the Love Fest the first week of October and our stay was a bit rough here but I'll start with the positives we were only across the street from the Love Fest action so that was a good thing and the staff was great and super helpful. The concierge in the morning seemed to be the most knowledgeable about the area and the lady at the front desk was very nice. Now on to the bad, being from LA the homeless people did not bother us so that was no issue at all. The problems we had were the kind of false advertisements they had for the hotel and it not being anything as displayed on both its website and other travel sites. There were so many things broken or just not working at this place. I heard the elevator has been broken for nearly 2 months and the ice machines did not work either. Funny thing also the power in our room kept going out for some reason in the morning, is that supposed to happen in a hotel? Other than that I think the staff made up for all of the negatives of this place but I dont think we will stay here again.
Convenient choice, value for money, no restaurant

An interesting property, right in the cetner of a somewhat intimidating Civic Center district. The hotel is old but seems well kept, although there was no restaurant available while we stayed there. It's supposed to reopen this summer. But we found some excellent places to eat within walking distance, towards the Vietnames neighborhood on larkin Street, and also along Market Street. The staff was young, dynamic and helpful. The room was clean and for the price we caould complain about anything. The best about this hotel was that it had immediate access to the train (airport link) and the trolley (to Fishermen's WHarf). Good shopping nearby at the Nordstrom/Bloomingdales center.

Comfortable clean rooms for a good price. Front desk and security staff was friendly and helpful. Located right in front of the train an subway station, therefore very easy to access from the airport. Restaurant not open when we stayed there.

This hotel is one of my favorites in San Francisco. A certain old Europe charm, easy to access, close to everything, no frills, and unbeatable rate. Great value for money.
Old and worn out . . .

Like many other reviewers, I expected a lot more from what was presented on the travel agency website. This hotel was built in 1909, and except for paint and furnishings, has not gotten much of an upgrade since. And, the furnishings -- carpet, furniture, bedspreads (and even the bedding) -- was last updated about 1970. The sheets and pillowcases were almost worn out, there was not heat (radiators turned off), and the only ventilation is to open the (unscreened) window. The neighborhood is interesting; lots of transients on the sidewalks, many of whom sleep across the street at night (my room was on the north, and that was the view). The staff was nice and helpful, and I can't hold them responsible for the condition of the hotel. But I would not stay here again, at this price -- I'd go to Motel 6.
