Not worth the money!

Not worth the money, bathroom was small and disgusting. Really old feel. Would not stay here again...ever! And dont recommend anyone stay here. Parking is an additional $18 a day for guests and there is really no where else to park on the streets unless you want to get towed.

Bottom Line: Economy/Value/Low Frills

Okay, let's tell it like it (really) is: My family owned two units in the Island Colony for many years, and the building is now old, with fairly outdated facilities and rooms and appointments (though they are doing some work). I would not recommend the Island Colony for yuppie status-concious couples, as I am afraid you will be disappointed. HOWEVER, if you are looking for an economical hotel right off of the Ali Wai Canal, and two blocks from Kalakawa, with some unparalleled views (if you select the right room), then you will be glad you gave this one a shot. Since my family sold the last unit in 2004, we have gone back twice to stay. It is a solid value for the money. Yes, the furnishings, and decor are very old and in some cases quite worn, but in our experience, basically clean. The Lanai is large for Waikiki standards, and worth a fair amount if you can get a high floor room. The kitchenette is very functional and can save you some money if you get the rooms with a larger fridge to store leftovers and some staples. Parking is now $18/day and almost compulsory due to the lack of street parking in all of Waikiki. The parking garage elevators take you only to the lobby, where you must then get into another separate elevator to go to your room floor - goofy, but adds a measure of security. The actual street the hotel is on (Seaside) is a little "ratty", but not really a problem. Just bear in mind this is not a 4-5 star major hotel right on the beach. We will most likely stay there many times in the future and "take the good with the bad".

Good as I expected

The hotel was what I was expecting...nice but older, it served it's purpose. There were no bed bugs!! We upgraded to a 1bedroom ocean view room with full kitchen...views of the city and ocean at night are awesome. I give the hotel staff a A1 rating, very friendly and very prompt on any request we made. Hotel location was good...10 minute walk to Waikiki beach or 4 minutes to a bus stop. The pool was open and great to relax in, and the hot tub was hot. I would recommend to others- good for the money.

EXCEPTIONAL CUSTOMER SERVICE

The front desk reps were very friendly and helpful, check in was quick and made me feel welcome. I called the front desk and told them, the a\c wasn't cooling the room. They had a brand new unit installed in 30 minutes, that worked perfect. however, the pool area was somewhat affected - repair to the exterior of the hotel..... As aqua resorts advertise - island colony is a mid-level hotel - and I must add island colony is a very good mid-level hotel.......

Better off somewhere else

Checking in, we were asked for our drivers licenses (looking at our ids for reservation verification, I can understand). However, the desk person takes them into the back room and makes a copy of all of them. Comes back out and when asked why he made a copy, he explains that it is part of hotel’s policy. Then when told we did not want the ids copied because of our identity theft concerns, he said, "oh, I only made a copy of one id." As this is a first for me, we asked to speak to the manager. The assistant manager comes out holding a copy of the six ids in our group (the employee flat out lied to our face about how many ids were copied). When asked about the policy, the assistant manager cannot explain or give any valid reason why the hotel would need a copy. Despite the above, the rooms are very outdated and are disgusting in most respects. If you like sleeping on a rock hard bed, this is probably the hotel for you. However, if itchiness of the sheets and the feely that bugs are crawling on you is not for you, then I would pass on this hotel. The bathroom is just as bad because it was dirty. The floor was dirty with mold in the corners, the shower was unclean and you felt like you should wear shower shoes. Also, the A/C was not sufficient to cool the room and had black stuff coming from its vent. The bottom of the closet door had water damage. All and all, the room felt very unclean. We tried to spend the least amount of time possible in this hotel. No rating should be above a 1 out of 5 here.
