The Palms

The Palms Hotel and Casino is one of the newer establishments in Las Vegas, but it is quickly gaining a reputation as a haven for celebrities, the hip crowd, and all twenty-something tourists with weekend fun in mind. When I first heard of the deluxe party suites at the Palms, I thought they would be the perfect location for our wedding-reception/party.

It turned out I had a great idea- as a few months later, MTV had the same idea and hosted their Video Music Awards here. Unfortunately, the increased publicity that these suites have received in recent months has only made the cost go up exponentially. Good thing I had booked one before this happened.

The Palms is split into two towers, one housing typical hotel rooms and the other housing their "fantasy suites". The "Fantasy Tower" has about twenty themed suites ranging from about 2,000 square feet to 100,000 square feet. They have one with a full-court basketball court, one with a bowling alley, several with glass-balcony pools, and one modeled after the popular Ghost Bar. All of these suites come complete with huge showers with stripper poles in them, at least 20 flat –screen TVs, and deluxe sound systems.

Planning our party at the Palms was a bit difficult since I felt like they did not care to talk to people over the phone and present the options that were available in a timely manner. I was a little uneasy when we arrived that the catering package that we opted for would not be set-up as we discussed (and paid for). But once we set foot into our room, I was relieved to find everything was in place and we were soon greeted by several "suits" who assured us that they were taking care of all the arrangements. It was very different dealing with the hospitality and catering staff in person rather than over the phone. Our party was a very successful one.

The Palms caters to a younger crowd than several of the other Las Vegas casinos, but has all the high-end amenities that higher-class tourists and high rollers are looking for. The casino is very open-feeling with high ceilings and modern fixtures. The public areas of the hotel are all nicely kept and modern looking. Shops include a Playboy store and the famous Sunset Tan that is featured on its own reality show.

Several Vegas hotspots are located at the Palms and are definitely worth the visit if you have VIP passes or don’t mind waiting in an hour-plus line. The Ghost Bar has one of the best views of Las Vegas and Moon is quickly becoming a destination of choice for many of the city’s hipper crowds since its recent opening. The pool at the Palms is also host to a large party on Fridays.

I will probably never stay again in a room like the "Celebrity Suite" we booked in Las Vegas, but it was definitely an experience worth having. The amenities were not comparable to anywhere else I had ever stayed and the space completely impressed all of our wedding guests. Even though we couldn’t afford the $100,000/night Hugh Hefner Suite this time, the Celebrity Suite provided enough luxury to keep us content. I would highly recommend the Palms and their staff if you’re planning a special event in Vegas that is unlike any other that you have probably experienced.

STAY HERE ONLY IF YOU ARE A CELEBRITY

If you are an average Joe, you will get treated like crap. Right from the beginning, they actually told us that they did not have our reservation and said it would take 3 hours for travelocity to fax them confirmation. I do not believe this story. We he had a very good price, and that is why we were told this. We were told, "That's the problem with booking through third parties". We had to call travelocity, and they still wanted us to wait 3 hours for a "fax" to come from travelocity. We threw a fit, and were finally put into a room, with a lot of attitude. They were completely disinterested in us and unwilling to offer any solutions. The front desk and concierge people were downright rude. The bartender at the pool threw away the fruit we paid a lot of money for. Also, they search your bags before you go to the pool to make sure that you do not bring any water of food from outside of the pool area "contraband", so you have to buy stuff at the pool. The towels have fuzz all over them. The rooms are not clean in places that are not immediately seen by the eye. This was my first time in Vegas, and I was completely disappointed with The Palms.

Everything costs extra...

We thought we were getting a deal on the room but they charge you for everything at this hotel. It costs $20 just to work out in their fitness center, which was completely empty by the way. They charge for the in-room internet and for the business center internet - neither of which was specified on their website which is what made me so upset. False advertising! Also, you cannot bring any food or drinks even ones from the hotel itself out to the pool area. Everything has to be bought there. The new spa at Palms Place was really nice and Moon and Playboy Club were good too but you don't need to stay there. There are much better deals. Good beds but no vanity which really stunk for us girls trying to get ready. Also, one day the maid service didn't clean our room till after 5 p.m. and we had to call. Not cool.

More for the young crowd

Rooms were nice but very noisy people next door. Kept us up at night. Nothing to do inside of hotel except gamble. NO good shopping there. Had to find someone to ask for a drink.Have to take taxi to other places. Liked staying on the strip better.

i went to the palms last year for a friends graduation present and we loved it!! the rooms were great - super comfortable beds and housekeeping gave us extras of everything. the pool was the best part - great music and the banana daquiri is to die for. it's definately a place for younger travellers, but if you read any reviews on the palms you would know that - we are visiting again this year for a longer stay
