Lovely Grounds and Main House, Shabby Rooms

We booked a room at the English Inn at the last minute. We were pleased by the relatively low summer rates--particularly given our poor planning.

Pluses: Really lovely and peaceful grounds. The main house is in great shape and tastefully decorated. All of the staff with whom we interacted were nice and polite. Our room was generally clean and surprisingly large and well equipped for the price (two beds, a full sofa, fridge, microwave).

Negatives: We stayed in the carriage house, and it was really in need of some TLC. The carpet was ratty from the entrance on through our room. Furniture was shabby rather than shabby chic. One of the two beds had a halfway decent mattress, but the other was droopy. Also, the bed we did not use had a frame that was much too large for the mattress, which left a big gap between the frame and mattress (tacky looking!).

This could be a decent moderately priced choice for travelers who value space and gardens over decor.

Rude and Uncomfortable Please stay elsewhere.

I have never been so rudely treated in any hotel, ever! First be prepared to carry your own luggage (upstairs and across gardens). This hotel has no help with luggage and they seem put out by the suggestion. Second, don't plan on eating. Yes they have a restaurant but they seem proud that they can't get you in for a quick bite. The brochure they give at check in says they serve breakfast, they don't! No there is no bar food or room service and the hotel is in the middle of nowhere. The receptionist actually told a guest that the closest restaurant was a McDonald's. They make no effort to make any suggestions or be helpful. The tone of every staff member we encountered was rude and dismissive. The rooms are cheaply furnished which look good in pictures but are awful in person. There is also a big difference in the rooms in the main house and those in the other cottages. The gardens are beautiful, however you are in Victoria so you can't walk a block without finding a beautiful garden. There are many more beautiful options with a staff the cares if you enjoy your stay.

Need for renovation

The setting is lovely and the restaurant quite good, though a bit short-staffed to handle a full complement of dinners. The room we had was on the third floor (walk up) of an older annex. The ventilation was poor, there was no airconditioning, and the room was hot and very musty/moldy. The hotel is apparently in the midst of a re-do by a relatively new owner and there may be some redone rooms but we did not see any evidence of that.

nice hotel, very uncomfortable bed

I've stayed at the hotel with my wife. Everything was very nice - old style room, buildings, lots of trees, thermostat in room & bathroom, etc. People were very friendly, the lounge also had computer with free internet access. Location was quite convenient w/ a car - about 5 minute drive from downtown while being in a nice quiet neighbourhood. The only thing that was wrong was the bed and pillows. Bed was what felt like put together from 3 or 4 pieces, it was very large but only semi-comfortable sleepiing areas were at the edges of the bed. Pillows were very flat and still lumpy. If they upgrade the beds (or maybe if they have better ones in other rooms), I'd certainly stay there again.

A Gem in Victoria

What a wonderful surprise! Our group had two very different rooms. One, a cosy cottage, the other a stunning contemporary suite that had recently been refurbished. The grounds are lovely, the food service is simply outstanding. This was a treasure and close to downtown.
