I had read reviews on this and other sites about this hotel, so I was a little leery when we arrived, but I was pleasantly surprised. It's a nice hotel and the staff we dealt with were courteous and helpful.
Our room was not large, but it was just me and my husband, and we didn't spend a lot of time in the room, so it was perfect for us.
There's no pool at this hotel, so if that's one of the amenities you're looking for, just skip this one.
The major pluses for this hotel are that it's very centrally located. It's right in the middle between two different T stops (about 1 1/2 - 2 blocks to get to each one), there's a pharmacy around the corner and the Hotel 140 (also around the corner) has a fairly good full-size breakfast in their cafe.
We didn't partake in the continental breakfast offered by the hotel, because my husband prefers something more substantial than pastries and coffee. Although, honestly, we didn't even take a look to see what was offered.
This is an older hotel, so if you're looking for something really fancy, this probably isn't it. But for the area, it was a very good bargain and it was comfortable.
About the only downside I experienced was the size of the bathroom. It is small, but it was always clean and we always had clean towels.
If you're looking for a bargain hotel centrally located in the heart of Boston, don't overlook the John Hancock because of some of the other reviews. We had a good experience and I would probably choose this hotel again, as long as I'm not taking a child.

I have stayed at the JH just about every time I stay in the city on buisness. Be prepared if you want a great location and a decent place to stay this is such a great deal. I always get a great rate no matter what the time of year. If this place painted the rooms they would have such a great place. So again if you don't mind a " not perfect " room but want to walk to good reasturants this is a great find!

Stayed here 9/08 and it is a very well kept secret. Classy, clean, super staff Basic rooms, and larger than average bathrooms. Very close to all of the attractions and the best value I found in Boston. Safe neighborhood, close to 2 train stations. Drawbacks are a lack of hotel restaraunt and a small lobby with no real place to hang out. Also, guests park at parking garage across the street and have to drag luggage down steps and across the street. My 72 & 68 yr old parents handled it well, but just know if you have a car that this may be a problem, though the staff offered to help us with our luggage. If you are a tourist looking for a reasonably priced hotel that is clean and safe and comfortable, without a lot of glitz (though the hotel is really historical and classy), this is your place. We felt very lucky to find it on the internet. I was very relieved when we checked in, because for the price, I wasn't sure what to expect, but this was a real gem. If you need room service or a pool or a gym, pay the big bucks somewhere else. And the staff was delightful and helped us with where we needed to go, even searching the internet for me.

I was booked for a non-smoking room, arrived to find that all they had left (despite my reservation) was a smoking room. Not a great start. That night I realized also that I'd forgotten my razor. I called to the front desk and was assured there would be a replacement. In the morning, however, there was none. I wound up walking three blocks to a CVS to pick one up. My fault for forgetting, but replacement razors are one of the things you expect in a conference hotel.
That said, location was good, price was fair, and the continental breakfast was more than adequate.
Nice place to stay.

The Hotel is near the Boston Commons and within easy walking distance to downtown Boston. While it's an older Hotel, the rooms are neat and clean. The bathroom could be updated, but again it was neat and clean. The staff was very helpful. Overall it was a very good value for the price.
