Mediocre for the price

The location of this hotel is very nice. It's very close to a main strip, the ocean and the bay. The overall appearance is great - on the outside. The room was clean, the bathroom could have used an update though. The floor was faded from age and looked grungy. Our biggest complaint and the reason we would never recommend anyone to stay here or stay here again ourselves is the fluctuation in the water temperature when taking a shower. We asked why the water goes from scalding to freezing at random and got the response of 'It's an old building'. Great .... we've stayed in plenty of hotels and never had this problem before. Very very friendly staff and a grocery store is close.

Grounds beautiful and well kept. Almost feels like you are in a tropical jungle. There are talking Macaws but it was too cold for them to come out while we were there. Geese, ducks in ponds on grounds. You could walk for a mile or so just around their grounds if you wanted to. Refrigerator in our room in cupboard under vanity area but no microwave. Room clean and furniture nice-only problem is the mattress is quite firm and not terribly comfortable. Balcony off each room with chairs, small table. Pool area beautiful and kept clean. Lobby has waterfall-beautiful. LOCATION is fantastic. Ocean is across the street with miles of sandy beach and a cement walkway for biking, walking or running. Even in cooler weather the beach was bustling with activity and a fun place to be. Rental shop at hotel to rent bikes, boards, etc . Other side of hotel on Mission Bay with nice sidewalk around bay and beautiful views also. Did not eat at the hotel restaurant as it was very pricy, but did stop at their bar. Bar is very small but staff friendly. Many places to eat within a 6 block radius or so. I highly recommend the Eggery (across the street and 1 block north in a little mall) for excellent omelettes and breakfasts. Also try Fillippis (Italian--best pizza ever) and Fred's Mexican Restaurant both located on Garnet Ave. Staff in every area of hotel were helpful and friendly. Parking was $13 per day self park but lot is secured and I felt very safe keeping my rental car there. Ralph's grocery store located 3 blocks north-get a savings card at checkout. Will definitely stay here again in future!

The Catamaran Resort & Spa was a beautiful hotel. The location of the hotel is perfect if you want to enjoy the beach. The staff was very friendly. The ducks and birds were a nice touch , but I must say that the musky smell in the room was overwhelming. My husband and I were bothered the entire time we were there. We made several trips to the local drug store to buy Lysol and anything else that would help with the odor. I also was surprised at the poor condition of the bathroom. There were several cracks in the tile and mildew that I had to ask housekeeping to spray. I ended up spraying it myself. I don't believe we would stay there again.

The resort is sandwiched in between two beaches and has beautiful grounds. It's not an upscale area or anything, just a local beach. The front desk was staffed with pretty, friendly girls who upgraded me to a suite before I even had a chance to ask and comped my parking. I don't know if that's because it was the offseason or because they knew I'd be writing a review on this site, but who cares? I didn't get a spa treatment or anything, but it looked nice. They have all kinds of water sport rentals, which is pretty cool. Standard pool and jacuzzi. For the deal I got on here, it was a great value.
