Description: Romantik Hotel schweizerhof can be found in a tiny alley at the foot of the ancient castle wall. You would be unlikely to stumble across this great hotel unless you were doing some serious exploration of Gyor. You may have heard about the hotel from someone who has previously stayed there but you would not have seen an advertisement for it because the hotel doesn’t advertise.
The Hotel and Restaurant is now a member of the international organisation, "Romantik Hotels & Restaurants" and the prestigious French gastronomy club, "Club Prosper Montagn". The hotel was founded by a Swiss businessman in 1995 and is still owned and managed privately. The hotel owns three separated buildings which form a little street of unique atmosphere.
The main hotel is in the largest building which has been built in period style completely in keeping with the surrounding old town. Rich vegetation and a terrace with parasols invite you to enjoy the delicious cuisine and relish the calming antique atmosphere of the old town while drinking a glass of wine. The air-conditioned rooms with bathroom are fitted up with minibar, telephone, high speed Internet and colour-TV. Each room is furnished in individual colours, is attractive and has a nice atmosphere. This building has an underground car park and a fitness center with sauna, solarium, whirlpool, massage and Gym equipment.
The second building dates from 1765 and contains the hotel’s gourmand restaurant, Bacchus wine-house, and two small conference rooms. The restaurant and wine bar open until 1 am and are classy and intimate. I felt, however, that the bar lacked atmosphere in the evenings, which is probably due to its central location close to a variety of other restaurants and bars. Each year, Monsieur Matter, a French master chef who has been awarded a “Michelin” star, is a guest cook in the hotel. Although he wasn’t there when we visited, the standard of the cuisine was excellent and the service was just fine.
Of interest to those with more time would be the hotel cottage which is 45 minutes away in a nature conservation area. The cottage has a swimming pool and offers horse riding, walking and peace and quietness in a forest setting by a river. The hotel will organize excursions for barbeques, with or without accommodation.
