rundown and moldy

when we first started looking for a hotel we wanted to stay on the beach at a decent price. we came accross this hotel which seemed to be a great price for 3 star hotel so we booked it. upon arrival we noticed the hotel was old and in desperate need of a paint job and other repairs. we thought maybe the rooms might still be ok for our short stay. after we checked in we entered our room and noticed a musty odor and could not tell why. we looked around the room and found numerous areas with mold issues like the bathroom sink area, near small frig and on the ceiling above the bed. also the furniture was in bad shape, floors were dirty and AC did not work properly. We called travel website customer care and asked if we could check out right away which we could but with a one night penalty. so we decided to checkout and ask the hotel manager for some type of discount which was denied. The hotel is a 1.5 or maybe a 2 star that needs alot of work.

Expected Better - Not 3 Star

Rooms seemed shabby - bed not particularly comfortable - pillows hard - bathroom tiny and dingy. No towels and only 5 hangers in the room when checked-in. Went to front desk and asked for both, was told they would be brought up. Went out for 6 hours; no hangers and only one washcloth on return. Went to desk again, got more washcloths, was told they could not get us more hangers; they would have had to move us to another room; but did not offer to do so. We told them we would have bought some hangers if they had told us they would not provide them. 10 minutes later a man showed up with several mixed hangers. Small TV - can only be viewed from bed. 2 hard chairs at a small table in another part of the room. No fan in bathroom. No beach access, basically no beach - severe beach erosion all along coast - disappointing but not their fault. Parking lot being repaired/sealed/striped while we were there - noisy & messy. Restaurant best feature & has killer view.

On beach BUT, no beach access. You have to walk over a 1/4 mile each way to get to the water even though the hotel is right on the beach, go figure. Rooms ok and management is friendly. No free breakfast but free newspaper.

We had an incredible stay. The staff was exceptional as well as the food and all the amenities. We hung out at the pool most of the time, however the beach is right there and so convenient. A definate change from Md. Beaches. So much safer for the kids. We plan to go back next year for the same week. We met so many wonderful people. It is a must stay for us. Food was excellent!!!! We can't wait to return.

Tides

Tides is one of the few places left in Palm Beach where you can catch the ocean breeze on a deck by pool side. Hurricane Wilma brought much erosion to their beach front so you must take a giant step down from their last step onto the beach and either head left under the stairs or go right. Local Condo owners have lost beach front too. I was told that the town will be replentishing the beaches sometime soon. This in no way took away from my purpose of being in the ocean. The water is clear and enjoyable. However,I resented breathing in 2nd hand smoke from a majority of the patrons and folks at poolside sitting at tables. Our room had mold on the ceiling, and after the first night the manager /owner who was very nice let us move. That room had an intense smoke smell all over. WE were then accommodated by being allowed to stay in the suite for our last night. There were no utensils or plates. We had bought food earlier so we resorted to tcave man style of eating. The beds were good. The rooms were clean. The Tides is an old, family run business. Hopefully they will spruce it up and work on ceiling problems. It is in a great location. I noticed other families with smaller children were arriving. A suggestion for them would be to carry boogie boards and a few rental items for kids. Not everyone sits at a table and smokes. We did not eat at the resteraunt. It was expensive. Perhaps they could carry an alternative menu. The waitresses were wonderful. Check in and check out was easy. The pool is immaculate.
