Hotel A-Okay

The Handlery was great--good rates, nice room, friendly desk people, good location. Nothing real fancy, but you can always go across the street to the St. Francis for fancy.

Really enjoyed our stay (with kids)!

We spent Thanksgiving break at the Handlery. We stayed on the top floor/street side of the tower. Kids (12 and 14) really enjoyed the sliding door that opened to the street view, but we could not escape the sirens, people noises, barking dogs, garbage trucks, etc. that echo around the buildings. This is part of the big city experience, but I recommend packing a noise machine. Room was comfortable in every way (with queen bed upgrade) but TV was ridiculously small. Handlery staff were great. At check-in I mentioned my son was a bed-hog, and a few minutes after we arrived in the room the front desk called to see if we would like a fold-out for him. Kids loved taking the cable cars down to Fisherman's Wharf -- it added to the sense of adventure. However, the lines were often long at the start/end of the day with waits of up to an hour to get back to Union Square. We thought it was worth it, but you may not. Hertz rental car is literally around the corner from the Handlery. We rented a car for about $60 and drove out to the Napa Wine Train for Thanksgiving dinner. So easy, and a lovely excursion even the kids enjoyed.

I was not impressed with this hotel. Most of the staff was helpful and polite. For the nightly rate I was expecting more. The room was small, the bathroom was tiny, and the street noise was extremely loud all night until the about 2:00 a.m. It was as if the windows were open... horns honking, people yelling, and sirens!!! Good luck sleeping. Then on top of the room rate plus additional nightly room taxes you had to pay to park your car at the hotel..... and pay additional parking taxes. For two nights we paid around $90 just in parking fees and taxes. Parking should be complementary for the hotel guests.

Great location, nice hotel
