Not What Was Pictured on the Website

We had reservations to stay here. Much to our surprise the unit was not on the ocean. When you go to the main website it appears that the units are on the ocean or that they all have ocean view. This is not so.
Our room was not at all like the room pictured on the website. We ended up staying elsewhere (Marriott) as this place was very dirty on the interior and exterior.
It is unfortunate when a company misrepresents what a place is like on a website. Don't rely on the pictures!!!!

Best Things Nearby:
Lihue, Beach, Duke's, Grove Farm

Best Things About the Resort:
Pool, tennis courts, convenience to Lihue

Resort Experience:
We had a two-bedroom, two-story unit. Upstairs was a master bedroom and a smaller bedroom. The air-conditioners are on timers so that they cannot be left on continuously. Fortunately, it is usually cool at night in Hawaii. These units are not built to catch the trade winds well, though. There was a large hedge right behind our balcony.

We were not unhappy with our unit though. Its location and the quality of the pool and tennis courts more than made up for any shortcomings.

Best Things Nearby:
It is a 5-minute walk to Kalapaki Beach, 10-minute drive to K-Mart, Wal-Mart, grocery store. It is close to two small malls where you can also get souvenirs and shave ice (yummm). It is a 10-minute drive from Lihue Airport.

Best Things About the Resort:
Banyan Harbor is centrally located, which allows you to travel to the North and South shores quite easily. The living room and two bedrooms have A/C's. There is a pool that has a view of the city and part of the beach. The staff is friendly and helpful.

Resort Experience:
The resort is a modest, older resort. The two-bedroom unit has two stories with a fully-equipped kitchen. We had a unit with an ocean view, but it was somewhat marred by a view of the busy industrial harbor. Some of the units have stairs to the carport, but ours was just outside our door, so it was pretty handy with loading/unloading.

If you are like us and gone most of the day, this resort is fine. But if you want to relax close to the beach and avail of different amenities, you might want to look elsewhere. It is a 5-minute walk to the beach, but due to our small kids, we preferred to go to Lydgate State Park (that has an enclosed area for snorkeling - I highly recommend this! - aside from a nice playground). The playground across the street was not well maintained when we were there. Although I would say that the Kalapaki Beach seems a lot of fun for surfers!

The next time I go, I think I would like to spend less time with touristy stuff and find a resort that would be more beachfront (I liked Poipu Beach, Kapaa areas - although the water there might not be great for swimming). Thought that Princeville resorts were beautiful, but being up the cliffs from the beach doesn't do much for me (maybe if I golfed more).

Best Things Nearby:
It was close to shopping, restaurants, and the Marriott Resort and Country Club.

Best Things About the Resort:
It's location on the island was perfect for sightseeing, from the west/southwest to east/northeast routes. The resort itself is not a premium resort - it sports both year-round residents and timeshare use. It has an outdoor pool and the units are clean and laid out well (two-story townhouse style).

Resort Experience:
This resort needs a face lift, but it's overall usefulness could not be argued with. Its location and view of the harbor was positioned to see the cruise ships arrive. The commercial/industrial look of the buildings surrounding the harbor made for a less than romantic view.

The shopping across the street provides a nice selection of boutique-type shops, souvenir shops, art studios, and restaurants. We were able to pick up a couple of lovely pieces of specialty art for our walls at home. We also were able to nab some really REALLY comfy thong sandals (slippas). We toured the Marriott grounds that centered the bay/harbor.

The Marriott had a bar - Duke’s - that had a nice waterfall, with seating all around the waterfall and Koi pond. Next to the Marriott was a country club and tennis club with a full golf course. They had beautiful grounds, which we wondered through. Some of the vacation homes along the cliffs had wonderful views of the harbor.

Again, the best thing about staying at Banyan Harbor was its location and proximity to Lihue and neighboring towns.

Best Things Nearby:
This resort was only about a 5- to 10-minute drive to the airport. It is 5 minutes to a large mall with a grocery store and many other handy stores, like Sears. It is also across from the Nawiliwili Harbor, were you can charter a fishing boat.

Best Things About the Resort:
Good value with good amenities. The pool has a great view of the beach across the street and the surrounding mountains. Clean units with moderate size.

Resort Experience:
I was a little nervous about the resort, as I had read some reviews that were not very good. This resort is very nice and has great access to almost anything you want to do. The staff was very friendly and helpful with our requests. We had a two-bedroom unit, with the main floor having the kitchen and living area. There was also a half-bath on the main floor. On the upper floor were two medium-sized bedrooms and a large bathroom with en suite laundry. Very handy!
