Not too bad...

This hotel was just your typical Hilton..nothing fancy. Pretty basic, clean, comfortable. The staff was very helpful. The hotel is very close to the Union Square shops and within walking to China Town and the cable cars. The neighborhood is shady...if you walk one way it is very run down...seems to be a bad area of town with a lot of panhandlers. If you walk the other way..it's a bunch of very fancy shopping (Chanel, Nike Town, Macy's...) So, take that for what it is worth. The hotel is several miles from the airport. If you book through a online travel website it will automatically charge you for the Super Shuttle to the airport. The shuttle takes FOREVER!! And they pick up everyone they possible can until the shuttle is full before they head for your hotel or the airport. I would avoid this shuttle and just take a cab. It's around the same amount but much faster and convenient. ($37.00) The hotel is about an $9 cab ride or a long $5 cable car ride to Fisherman's Warf, and the Alcatraz Pier.

Who gave this four stars??

My husband and I went to the city for a romantic getaway. I wish we had stayed somewhere else. The hotel seems to be on the edge of the Union Square district and is surrounded on three sides with urine-smelling streets of questionable integrity after dark. When we went to park, we were shocked by the parking charges (they've gone up even since they were posted on travel website). $59 was the quoted price for valet and $55 for self-parking. The doorman offered us an "insider" tip to the cheapest parking garage in the city. What a lie...three blocks away and more expensive than the place across the street from the hotel! Upon checking in, we were offered two queen beds in a smoking room. We were able to argue out way into a non-smoking "king" sized bed room (it wasn't a king, seriously). The "view" was of a wall twelve feet outside our room. The room itself was tiny with a curiously configured bathroom the size of a closet. We were told the hotel was full and we weren't able to change rooms. EVERYTHING costs more at this Hilton. The continental breakfast is $23 (for one) with a $5 room delivery charge and a 20% convinence fee. Even Starbucks charges twice what they normally do. We woke up to housekeeping staff yelling their conversation down the hall and laughing loudly (at 6 am). Asking them to please quiet down didn't work and neither did calling down to the front desk. All in all, I have sayed at 2 star hotels that put this 4 star to shame. Spend your money elsewhere and get more for your buck.

4th of July Birth Day!!!

We traveled from San Diego. At first glance everything seemed fine. We asked for an upgrade when we checked in but the unconcerned and uncaring man checking us in would not accomodate. After seeing our room I was instantly disappointed. My husband went to the lobby and asked for the manager. He asked for an upgrade showing proof the 4th was also my B-day. After turning him down three times he finally came through. We would have to have smaller beds but I would get the view of the fireworks I wanted. The room was much better than the first one they gave us. I was happy the whole trip knowing I had such a beautiful view to end each day of my stay. We got the 37th flr of the 1st tower facing the bay. I would recommend the Hilton to my friends and family.

4 Star Hotel...NOT

Their idea of a Queen size bed is actually a full. The wall paper was peeling. The drapes were torn and they had holes. The toilet handle was broken, the bathroom was really tiny. The air conditioning unit did not keep the room cool. They nickel and dime you for everything. When we checked in, the bellhop did not inquire about taking our bags upstairs. When housekeeping cleaned the room, they neglected to put certain things like the brewing mugs back. The Hilton has really gone down hill.I have been a Hilton Honors member for almost 6 years, never have I had such a bad experience. The staff really didn't seem to care and it showed.

Four Star Hotel? You have to be kidding!

My wife booked a flight/hotel package for a short stay in the bay area to celebrate my 55th birthday. This included a three night stay at the S.F. Hilton. The first room offered to us was adajcent to the elevator banks. The room also overlooked the pool, so the splashes and the shouts of the gleeful revelers competed with the constant "whoosh" sounds produced by the elevators. Room #2 offered by the surly desk clerk: small, dark, room barely able to accommodate the queen bed. Really depressingly claustrophobic. Back down to the front desk where the desk clerk was not only unsympathetic to our complaints, he began to argue with me. By then, I had had it with him, and asked to speak to a manager. Kept waiting for 10-15 minutes, the manager finally sauntered out from the back office. I expained our situation to him and requested a larger, lighter room located in a quiet part of the hotel. When he began to stonewall me, I asked him if the prepaid money that we paid could be refunded so that we could move to another hotel. He said this was not possible. The only thing that I could think of that could save us from staying in one of these horrible rooms was to offer to pay more to upgrade to a better room. This, surprisingly was possible, so we paid an additional $50.00 per night to upgrade to a "Junior Suite", which turned out to be a room large enough to accommodate a small loveseat and club chair in addition to a queen bed. The room itself was dirty, with stained and cigarette burned carpets and peeling wallpaper. There are so many great hotels in San Francisco. Avoid the Hilton at all costs.
