I don?t even know where to begin my nightmare stay at this hotel. The place reeks of mildew! My initial room was tiny, approx 10 x 10 foot, the queen size bed advertized turned out to be a full size bed, the drapes looked to have been up since the late 50?s, were falling apart and wouldn?t fully close, the carpet was filthy, the beds are built up on a makeshift 2x6 frame and all work done in these units appears to have been done by inexperienced non skilled laborers. The bathroom sink was a makeshift affair with exposed pipes, made of plywood and tile, a 2x4 holding one side up about 3? higher than the other. This room honestly would have been over priced at $*, let alone $* with taxes.
After 35 years of living in hotels as a professional touring musician, this is the second worse hotel I?ve run across in my life.
The clerk checked my room and claimed it didn?t smell then showed me another room, and promptly closed the door saying it was just as bad(Huh? I thought my room didn?t smell), room #3 was just as bad as well. Finally he found us a remodeled room that didn?t smell so much. I reluctantly agreed to stay there as I didn?t know where else to go, all rooms I had walked to nearby where booked. The room was better but still about a $* night room. The walls were paper-thin and the bathroom reeked of bleach.
Not so clean

We loved the location and staff...but the carpets and bathroom were filthy...not for families with children whom want to crawl around. Black feet if you took your shoes off :(

I searched endlessly for a budget motel (3 star rating) in Santa Cruz for a decent price. Apparently this does not exist in the height of the summer season. I finally gave in and booked the Bay Front Inn. I was very pleased. I still think I over-paid but it was the best budget motel ever. The rooms were roomy and clean. The front desk was very friendly. I felt safe at night. It is within EASY walking distance to downtown, the wharf and the boardwalk. My mom and I did a "girl trip" and we felt safe and comfortable the whole time and we didn't need to drive (that says a lot when you are traveling with a 67-year old grandma!) You can tell the owners care for the place. The gardens and overall grounds are very well kept. The room had a fridge and microwave. I was definitely pleased. The only downside was the parking. It is very tight, especially at night. The front desk said they would pay for meter parking if we ended up on having to park on the street, but like I said, we didn't need to drive with everything so close by. The other "ok" factor was the continental breakfast. I was coffee/juice, pre-packaged danish, instant oatmeal, and bananas and apples. But it was ok considering it was just a light snack until we could get to a real restaurant for breakfast. Overall, I would definitely stay again.
Generally very good accommodations

Pleasant, attentive innkeepers. I think the owners run it themselves. Clean comfortable room. Not crazy about the fluorescent light bulbs but they work, and they ARE "green" after all. Bathroom not stylish but very clean and spacious enough to easily put the suitcase rack in there. Bathroom also has the clothing rack in lieu of a closet. I found this very convenient. Small refrigerator and microwave provided. I didn't use pool or activities but noted there's a small patio area with a couple tables and chairs pleasantly shaded by trees. A short one-two block walk to the wharf and beach--only slightly farther than if you parked in the municipal lots. If you need multiple rooms, ask for the suite. Parking has no fee, contrary to on-line info.
