Chelsea Lodge

We had an itinerary that we knew was going to keep us hopping from the time we woke each morning until well into the evening hours. And in the last year, hotel room rates in Manhattan have finally recovered and then some from the aftermath of 9/11. So I set out to find an option that was going to allow us to spend our vacation budget on the plethora of things to do and see in NYC, while still being convenient, clean, comfortable, and safe.

That is exactly what we found in this gem of a small inn. First, for those who require a marble lobby with a fountain, and 24 hour concierge, bellmen, and room service, stop right here. Not only do you not get these amenities as a guest at the Chelsea Lodge, but our room didn't have a telephone, the 3-story hotel has no elevator, and most rooms share a toilet (although all rooms have their own shower and sink, and apparently, a couple of rooms do have their own toilet in exchange for a higher rate). If you aren't scared off, read on and you'll find out why you should consider staying here.

Before our arrival, easily the biggest concern of my wife was the shared WCs. Each floor of the inn has approximately seven small rooms and two shared WCs per floor. It didn't end up being very important to us, as we woke each morning in time to shower and get on with our day's activities, not returning until late that night, only to do it all over again the following day. But the few times we used the toilets, we did find the WCs to be spotless. And with two for each seven rooms, we never found ourselves waiting or bumping into other guests when in need.

Our small, tidy room with wood floors on the third floor included a double bed, a small closet, a window air-conditioning unit, a shower stall, a sink, a chest of drawers with a small television on top, a ceiling fan, and one chair. Everything in the room was spotless and functional, as were all of the hotel's common areas. Daily maid service was provided, including fresh towels and sheets.

The hotel is located on a quiet residential street in the Chelsea neighborhood, which is just north of the West Village and becoming one of the "hot spots" in Manhattan for dining and nightlife. Each guest receives a key to the front door, which is locked overnight, as well as a key to their room. A buzzer provides 24-hour front desk assistance during the overnight hours. We found the staff to be courteous and helpful.

Best of all are the rates: $110/night for a double, minus a 5% discount for those who pay with cash.
