Description: Location can be everything during wintertime in Chicago, and with its riverfront location and walking access to so many things on the North side of the river – the Sheraton was my pick for a New Years stay in the Windy City. That it had a pretty competitive rate for the NY weekend also helped out in making my choice. The hotel is within easy walking distance of the Navy Pier, and the shops and places to eat along Michigan Avenue, as well as the walking and running path along the river.
The surprise for me was that when I walked into the huge and well orchestrated lobby – I suddenly realized that I had actually stayed there 12 years ago while attending a journalist conference. The check-in lobby, connecting bar lounge area, and the corridor walkway area fronting the river are beautiful in their layout and the view of the river there is fantastic. It comes with my recommendation that during the holiday season, it is definitely worth a stop in to see the decorations and the river view - even if your not staying at the hotel.
I had booked a room with double beds as a just in case for friends on New Year’s Eve. Check-in was fast even with a holiday line of people arriving. The staff at the Sheraton were first rate in both being friendly and professional. The check-in staff and the Doormen were a lot of help during my stay and made for a really positive impression throughout the weekend
The room had a great view looking out over the Chicago River front with its large glass windows. That turned out to be a great thing in being able to look out and figure out the weather before going out of the hotel. The room stayed nice and warm despite the below zero wind chill temperatures outside But by far the best part of the stay were the beds. The beds were absolutely super comfortable – and offered up on of the best sleeping experiences you might have away from home. It almost felt like sleeping on a pile of pillows under an electric blanket.
The room came with a fully stocked fridge. That did make it a bit difficult to put things bought into the fridge. The 32" LCD HD television with in the room were definitely a big plus for watching football. However, the high speed internet connection is not free, and the daily price was a bit high for making connection. The room also has two sets of drapes, a light one that allows you to see out and a heavier one that allows you to sleep in.
The only disadvantage with staying at the Sheraton is that it is a bit of a walk from the Orange Line to Chicago Midway Airport, and while walking can be a great thing – it is not so in winter time. Best way is to just get a cab and enjoy the walk around the river without pulling your suitcase behind you. But if the weather is nice – it’s a 10 minute walk from the State Street Orange Line to the hotel along Wacker and across the river.
