This hotel is not for everyone, but for my husband and I it was great. The manager was actually really nice, and he let us check in hours earlier than the posted time. We got a light breakfast on a tray every morning, and it was just fine. The rooms are definitely nouveau flop-house, but the sheets and towels are clean, and the tv works. We were within walking distance of a lot of major attractions, and the City Tavern. The restaurant in the hotel is excellent, and the bartender is friendly and knowledgable. Best of all, you don't blow all your vacation money on a room you are just going to sleep and shower in. I think its a good deal for the savvy, budget-conscious traveler.

Incredibly seedy-- peeling paint, exposed rotting wood trim, broken glass, stained carpets, malfunctioning and/or disabled smoke alarms, and a unreachable "manager." Strange bits of rebar sticking out of the walls, lamps that don't work, etc. The place is like a squat you have to pay for. At the advertised $99 a night, it's WAY overpriced.
I finally had to admit I didn?t want to take my shoes off in this room, much less get into the bed. We could no longer find the ?manager,? so we gathered our things, dropped the key through the drop slot in the office door, and left the place for another hotel down the block. The attendant at this hotel told us they often get "refugees" from the Society Hill, and that they've heard it rents by the hour. I've stayed in funky places all over hte world, but this was by far the worst place I've ever been charged money for.

Let's see, what was worse? The cockroaches, the filth or lack of management on premises...hmm how about the Housekeeping staff that thinks it's ok to scream at a guest (me) while said guest is in bed so the staff can get a tray to clean up, and after many *no thank you, I'm in bed* from said guest, staff will not go away, and rudeness escalated to point of having to find management, who did nothing, even as staff member insulted guest in front of manager....needless to say, we checked out immediately, with NO refund offered or given at all. This place is disgusting. overpriced. and poorly managed.

Sweltering hot in Philadelphia, but Great Historical Location

Society Hill is in a great location, but the service isn't all that great. Even though I booked this ahead of time, the manager wasn't expecting me. It was great to be two blocks from the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. Breakfast was supposed to be included, but wasn't. I had to climb four floors of steep stairs, so wouldn't recommend to elderly or handicapped. It was challenging trying to sleep at night with no air conditioning with 70 degree nights and very humid. All that was provided to beat the heat was a fan that help a little. I would recommend this to someone not intending to stay in their room much, who wishes to be close to historical sites, but not during the heat of the summer.
