The Perfect Family Resort!

  • June 18, 2008
  • Rated 5 of 5 by a traveler from Travelocity.com
We just returned from Discovery Beach Resort on June 14th. We were traveling with 2 other families and had 10 children with us ranging from the ages of 8-18. The staff was always kind and courteous to the children and the adults. The children had access to a game room, pool, library stocked with board games, videos, and books, sand toys, and of course the ocean. The rooms were clean and everything was well maintained. We loved the huge balcony overlooking the ocean and the oversized master bedroom and bath. Although there was no daily maid service, a maid did come early Wednesday morning to clean our rooms and bring fresh linens and towels. We would definitely return to this wonderful resort!

Best Things Nearby:
Beach, Kennedy Space Center, easy day trip to Orlando

Best Things About the Resort:
It's right on the beach, great view of Kennedy Space Center launches, has an outdoor pool, and tennis/basketball courts with free use of equipment.

Resort Experience:
It's about an 8-story building, with two reasonably fast elevators. Check-in was fast. They have carts you can use to haul your stuff on check-in/check-out days. I think every unit has a balcony overlooking the ocean. The units are nice - furnishings equivalent to most of the places we've exchanged into.

My kids loved the beach, the pool (with staff run games like water-balloon toss, bingo, etc.), and the tennis courts. They also enjoyed watching a family of at least 12 cats that live in the natural area between the building and the ocean.

We like this resort enough to return - I think this was the third time. In December, the weather is generally good (70s day, 50s night usually), but the times we've been there, there has always been at least one or two days that are kind of cool for beach/outdoor pool. What we really liked is it's NOT hot and muggy like Florida usually is and nothing was crowded, like the popular spots in Florida usually are.

We found plenty of restaurants that were good for a family within 15-20 minutes.

We still haven't seen a launch, but I think it would be great. You can see part of Kennedy Space Center in the distance from the balcony of the unit, so I think the launch view would be spectacular. We did get to see a shuttle landing in 2002.

If you like vacationing on the beach with a spectacular view of the ocean, you’ll love Discovery Beach Resort. When we opened the sliding glass doors and saw the view, we knew we were in for a wonderful week.

The natural southern pine furniture, with rattan and louver panels, in both the living room and bedroom, was good looking. The coffee table and end tables had thick, heavy stone tops. Too many pieces of furniture cluttered the living room; the dining set was patio in style and too big for the room; unnecessary bar stools, next to the counter top and near the kitchen, took up more space and the beautiful big floor lamp was crowding. When we first entered the room, it prevented us from appreciating how nice the unit really was.

The entire complex was dedicated to using turquoise and shrimp colors, especially well done in the lobby. The color theme was continued in the units, as well. It didn’t quite match the expensive brocade fabric on the couch or the pictures on the wall. It was annoying to have a window in the bedroom that was easily accessible from outside, but it was necessary.

We really appreciated having two bathrooms. Only one had a shower, the other had a laundry, the one thing that makes all vacations clean and neat, all the time. A lot of storage space was available in the hallway and inside the unit.

Tennis and basketball courts, located over the garage, and the heated pool, near the lobby, were there to be enjoyed, along with a game room and an exercise room. A restaurant was located off the lobby, but the greatest attraction at this resort was being right on the beach, next to the ocean.

Discovery was a roomy two-bedroom unit that was well equipped and nicely furnished.

There were numerous activities to choose from each day. There was poolside Bingo or other games almost every day. There were plenty of activities for children as well. One day there was a wildlife demonstration in the lobby, including alligators, skunk, snakes, and a Florida panther. There are lots of trips and fishing excursions available through the resort activities director – you could even get a free Mary Kay makeover.
