Summer 2009 at Carriage House Suites

  • July 31, 2009
  • Rated 4 of 5 by Horne family from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
We had a family of 4 in the Carriage House Suites, behind the Inn at the Eastern Slopes Inn. We very much enjoyed our stay, the location and the surrounding amenities. It was a very nice get-away from city life and offered great hiking, kayaking, small town and outlet shopping, and decent food to boot. I loved that the wonderful organic "Flatbread" restaurant and charming coffee shop are on site. Great ways to start your morning and end your days.
The suite was one very large room that fit a queen or king size murphy bed and a double or queen pull-out bed. There was also an efficiency kitchen with a 2-burner hot plate, dishwasher, refrigerator and sink. It appeared to be clean, in good shape and with the customary supplied. It was cool enough that we could leave our windows open with a ceiling fan on, which we prefer. Train tracks were outside our window but were for the use of a sightseeing train that travels up the mountain, so it only passes a few times a day. We actually enjoyed waving to the passengers.
We all very much enjoyed the entire experience and would heartily recommend this location for a visit!

Lots of Different Room Configurations

Lots of Different Room Configurations

The Eastern Slope Inn is a large building at the Northern End of North Conway, but within walking distance of many of the attractions and amenities. The inn itself has a large number of rooms, and there are quite a few buildings close to the Inn, which also have accommodations under the Eastern Slope Inn management.

We were assigned a two room suite in one these buildings behind the Inn. One room had the kitchen area with microwave, fridge, table, sink and hot plate as well as bathroom with shower, and a double hideabed. This room had a screened porch as well as its own door to the outside. This room had a connecting door to another room, which had a Murphy bed and yet another hideabed. It had a large bathroom with Jacuzzi tub and its own door to the outside. It seemed that with this connecting door, it was possible that these two rooms could be rented out separately and called a studio or a hotel room. Space was tight and the televisions were small and the rooms although clean and well maintained had older dated furnishings.

We were surprised with a phone call asking how everything was and so when I said it was a bit awkward, she said there was some other availability and we could have a look at a large studio or another one bedroom unit in another building farther away. While I was getting the key for this another family was getting a key for a 4-bedroom unit, which was a bit of a drive away. There seemed to be several maps to different buildings--it seems Eastern Slope Inn has bought up many different stand-alone units around town.

The second unit we looked at and ended up staying at was much larger, the furnishings and building seemed newer, and the unit itself was configured in a more traditional layout of living/dining area and kitchen and then a separate bedroom with king size bed. The single central bathroom could be accessed through either room, so it was possible to use it without one party disturbing the other. There was a gas fireplace and each room had a television, although the one in the bedroom could only be used to play watch videos. There were lots of windows and sunlight streamed in.
Initially, our gas fireplace appeared to be nonworking and we had to call the front desk who promptly sent Lesley from maintenance. He was so fast; it was as if he was waiting outside our door. Scary!

Eastern Slope Inn has a few restaurants, a pool and a fitness center; however, we did not stay long enough to make use of any of these. The people at the front desk were friendly and helpful. We arrived a few hours prior to the official check-in time and hoped we would gain early access, but we had to wait until half an hour prior, which was frustrating as it delayed us getting settled. It was not a busy time of year, so it seemed rather petty to have to wait, but I guess the front desk staff probably do not have that much discretion to allow guests in early.

Suites At Eastern Slope

Suites At Eastern Slope

One of our favorite exchanges in ski country is The Suites at Eastern Slope in North Conway, NH. It's in the center of town on Main Street within walking distance of eclectic shops and a few restaurants. You have use of all the facilities of the Eastern Slope Inn - an older hotel turned into suites with a pool, gameroom, very small gym, a coffee shop - "Espresso Grind", and a bar/restaurant - "Flatbread" with a very limited menu known for their wood oven flat bread pizza. The very large lobby has a few seating areas with comfortable sofas and chairs and even complimentary internet access.

The Suites are behind the Inn on two terraced levels - the newer of these two is called "Whitaker Suites" - We have previously exchanged in the "Carriage House Suites" they are basically the same - I've reviewed them here in the last couple of years, but I'll make comparisons in this review.

It was easier to park on this lower level – more spaces were available and since it was further away from Main Street, non-guests did not use the spaces. Whitaker Suites were more quiet in regard to street noise and the bothersome early morning noise from maintenance and the laundry room (these are on the basement floor of the "Carriage House Suites".

We were in a studio with a pull out and a murphy bed. The furnishings are good quality, utilitarian condo style. No complaints at all. Nice touches include artificial plants, a very large bathroom a Jacuzzi tub fit for two. A gas fireplace is the main source of heat for the unit - I found it romantic, but strange to wake up in the middle of the night to a fire……Some cost saving changes include a smaller dining table that seats four instead of six and a smaller sink/vanity area in the bathroom. Looks like an afterthought since there is too much unused space – the longer counter with double sinks would fill the space in a more attractive way. They have removed a linen closet in the bathroom and converted the space into a toilet stall – some may like this – I prefer the older bathrooms.

This kitchen has a stove top instead of a portable two burner plate – much nicer and easier to use. Whittaker also has a full size dishwasher that it quite noisy – make sure that you’re going out to dinner when you turn it on rather than when you are ready for bed. Dishes need to be washed every day even with this larger appliance because you are provided service settings only for four. A washer/dryer hidden in a closet is convenient in ski country.

Wireless internet access is available in these new units, but for some reason it is lost every Sunday night – some times it is restored on Monday or it can take as long as 2 days. You can go to the lobby, but it is quite a walk uphill from this newer section.

These units are very comfortable and extremely clean. We will continue to return to this resort, but if there is an option, we will confirm our exchange into the Suites at Eastern Slope instead of the older hotel accommodations at Eastern Slope Inn, but hopefully we will occupy the older Carriage House Suites instead of the newer "Whitaker" section.

Gross

Honestly, don't stay here. It is so gross. We stayed one night and checked out early to change to another hotel. When I told the staff we were checking out, they didn't even care! In fact, they told me they were charging us for that nights stay, even though we checked out 1 HOUR after check-out time. It wasn't JUST us...it was also another couple we were staying with.

The sheets didn't fit the bed so you would wake up sleeping on a nasty old mattress (if you even slept), the bathroom sink would not drain (I called and they never serviced it), the kitchen was NASTY - there was a tea kettle and a toaster from 1970, there was some moldy gross situation on the floor moulding in the kitchen. There was mold and mildew growing in the shower. The bed was the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept in, it was concave with springs and at least 20 years old...our other friends got only a murphy bed that pulls out of the wall.

There was NO parking. The pool had so much chlorine you couldn't stay in it because your eyes would burn so much. You couldn't sit in the jacuzzi because it was WAY TOO HOT. The staff was rude...for example, we showed up at 3:45pm and asked if we could check-in early (check in was 4pm) and she said "absolutely not." Oh, and the bar closes at 10pm. Our friends room was soooooo much worse than ours. They had green sheets...you can't bleach green sheets, get it? The fire sprinklers had what appeared to be hair, dust and mold growing from it...I can't explain it except to say that it was HANGING at least an inch down from the sprinkler...it was so disgusting.

We call it the Eastern Slum Inn Resort and when we moved, we went to the Hampton Inn down the street and THANK GOD they had 2 rooms available.

This is the single worst hell-hole I have ever stayed in and it will ruin your vacation if you are planning to relax in a happy clean place. I sprayed Lysol on everything I own when I got home, including the bottom of my suitcases, it was THAT BAD.

GROSS!

Resort Experience:
The Eastern Slope Inn looks like an old Victorian mansion that sits right on Main Street. There is an indoor heated pool, as well as hot tubs for sore muscles after a long day on the slopes. The resort has a restaurant, cafe, game room, and video rentals. It also houses an Eastern Mountain Sports store. The main inn has older rooms more like a hotel would be, while the condo portion is newer with excellent amenities. Some rooms have full kitchens and jacuzzi tubs. These rooms are very roomy for a large family, or two smaller families. The resort is within walking distance to the Main Street shops, restaurants, and cafes. I'd recommend this resort to anyone!
