They recommended the four-diamond rated The Shores Resort & Spa, as well as some three-diamond rated properties ...Read more Over-Rated and Over-Priced In planning our vacation to Daytona Beach, my wife and I contacted our local AAA office for recommendations. They recommended the four-diamond rated The Shores Resort & Spa, as well as some three-diamond rated properties that were significantly cheaper than The Shores. Wanting to make this a special time for our family, we chose The Shores for its professed extra amenities and four-diamond rating. That was a big mistake. Having been “stuck” before with extra fees for parking, we had our AAA agent contact The Shores directly to ask about extra charges because the property’s website made no mention of additional fees. We were present when she was told by The Shores representative on the phone that there were no additional fees for parking unless we wanted valet parking, which was an additional $10 per day. Believing that we knew what our stay at The Shores was costing, we booked four nights. However, we found out after arriving at The Shores that they did, in fact, tack on additional fees that were not covered in the already high cost of the room. They charged us an additional $17 per day plus tax for “self-parking”; wireless internet access (it did not work half the time and was very slow when it did work); use of a fitness center which we never used; use of a dvd library?; a daily newspaper that you had to pick up downstairs (rather than at your door); local and toll free calls (give me a break, everyone has a cell phone these days), and use of tennis courts, bocce ball, shuffleboard, and horse-shoes at an off-site facility somewhere down the road. The fee was a total rip-off. The only thing of value was the parking, which we had been assured before booking was covered in the cost of the room. To make matters worse for us, the room was nothing special. About the only amenity that was not standard hotel fare was the very comfortable, four poster bed. The Shores had the most beautiful, comfortable rooms... the service was amazing, and the drinks from the bar were the best my husband and I ever had! I would recoment this resort to anyone and everyone... you won't be disappointed!
