Ace - hotel of ear plugs

  • November 17, 2008

The noisiest hotel I've ever stayed in due to being right next to a main road and old 'warehouse' inherited windows. LOVED the decor tho and breakfast style, but didn't get a wink (even with the free ear plugs). Website said they were full when we tried to book, but just turned-up anyway and they fitted us in. 10 out of 10 for that. Very HIP and BRILLIANT location for walking to downtown for a Starbucks.

This is a minimalist hotel...that is what they told us.

This was truly a shock...we arrived late off Amtrak...and were greeted by a very busy bar...the hotel gives you free earplugs. I was praying there was another Ace Hotel in Seattle...but we were not that lucky. This should be called the Ace Hostel. They tell you there is a full breakfast included...ok...if a full breakfast is granola and Kirkland (Costco) yogurt...then enjoy your full breakfast. The bedding was horrible...really unbelievable. Words do not describe this experience. There is no pictures because they don't want you to see it. We paid $* and it should not have been more than $*. If you enjoy the Motel 6...then you will enjoy this place. Except you won't have a private bathroom and it isn't as nice. We had to go ask for a hair drier...and we were happy we only booked one night.

Fun Experience

The Ace Hotel is a fun place to stay. Ultra Modern decor is their signature, with most walls, floors, and ceilings being a stark white, with white and natural accent pieces to give it a minimalist modern feel. Our room was nice, if a little small, but not bad overall. The bathrooms were across the hall, there were plenty of them to choose from, so they never filled up. It's in a great neighborhood with great food/nightlife, and close to everything. It's definitely worth staying there for 1 or 2 nights during your trip, very budget friendly.

This is not the hotel for everyone. Only "deluxe" rooms have private bathrooms. Otherwise guests share pristinely clean bathrooms. In the deluxe rooms the bathrooms are hidden behind part of a brick wall that swings open. Fixtures are stainless steel and somewhat spartan, but the shower is roomy and there is plenty of hot water.Ace Hotel has free high speed wireless Internet access, a good radio and small TV in each room, and a copy of the Kama Sutra instead of Gideon's Bible in each room. Too bad the lighting's so bad because the reading is much more inspirational.

Last month, I overheard my boss recommending the Ace Hotel to another employee. I paused, "Have you stayed at the Ace Hotel?", I asked. It turns out she hadn't, and she didn't know anyone who had. She had just read a good write-up in a magazine. Well, I also read a good write-up, but I had the misfortunate to act on it. I was appalled by this place. Yes, it will appeal to some, but not nearly as many as might be encouraged by their website or magazine reviews.

The lobby lives up to the photos. It is really quite stunning, and if that was the extent of my experience, I would have been happy. However, the "deluxe" room we stayed in was a sketchy as any by-the-hour hotel. When I made the reservation, I had selected the deluxe corner suite looking at the water; that justified the $150 price tag.

I was so excited when we first walked in the door because the first impression was of the clean modern styling of the room. Cool! The James Bond sliding wall that hid the bathroom was as described in the review I had read. This is going to be so much fun!

Then you look closely...

The scratchy wool blanket looked as though it had been there from the '50s. The cracks and crevices around the sliding wall were dark and dirty. And the bathroom simply did not look clean. Yes, I knew to expect the condom and Kama Sutra on the night table, but it came across as seedy in the context of the atmosphere.

Frankly, I was a bit creeped out. As we walked back to the reception desk to ask for another room, I noticed several of the dormitory-style rooms. They had the same look and feel about them, but maybe it's okay if you're only paying $75. Anyway, the reception said their were no other rooms available, so we left. Now, it's possible that we missed out on the most comfortable bed in the world or maybe the mood changes after dark. Somehow I doubt it.
