Relaxing!

  • June 8, 2008

One night Anniversary getaway within a few hours from home! Beautiful, interesting place fiull of local history. We couldn't stop admiring the design & were awed at the story behind the building of The Porches. Everything was fun to look at including the old paint-by-number paintings and the fifties era books displayed everywhere. The front desk clerk directed us to an awesome Bistro within a few blocks for dinner. Relaxed on the rocking chairs on the front porch with night caps from the charming little bar and in the morning with coffee. The bathroom was beautiful and comfortable and the bed was cozy. We went there hoping to be able to relax and we DID! In our opinion: 5 stars

We just came back from a one night stay at the Porches. The room (2 queen beds) was great, bathroom almost the size of the room as well. The office staff was very friendly and helpful, would definitely stay again.

Porches

Who in his right mind would take a section of dilapidated factory row homes and turn them into a hotel? Well, when the abandoned factory has been renovated into a contemporary art museum, the idea must have seemed quite natural. And the result is The Porches Inn at Mass MoCA.

The row houses were lovingly renovated into a hotel with a very homey feel. Guests can choose to be greeted each morning by a room-service breakfast served in an aluminum lunch box (including coffee or tea, milk, fruit, juice, and a pastry). For the more sociable morning person, a continental-style breakfast is served each morning in the yellow reception building.

We visited while the weather was less than hospitable, so we weren't able to take advantage of the rocking chairs on the porches that connect the buildings, but they looked very inviting. We did take advantage of the fireplace in the reception building (and a nice glass of spirits). There were books, newspapers, and games to keep us occupied while we warmed up. We decided to play a vintage "Archie Bunker Card Game" while we sipped our wine and Scotch. (My husband was unable to convince the receptionist to sell it to him.)

The guestroom included some very nice amenities. Aside from the usual shower cap, shampoo, and soap, we were given a packet of herbal bath powders. There were robes provided in the bathroom as well. The minibar included a mini-souvenir shop where you could get your Porches T-shirt or corkscrew without having to visit the reception area.

By the way: My favorite part of the room was the safe hidden behind a painting.

The Porches Inn at MASS MoCA

A chic hotel has crashed landed into into a blue collar town. The owners did a serious fix-up job on old but beautiful Victorian row houses, and created something that is pretty unique. Although the junior suite rooms work for Mom, Dad, and 2 kids, the ambience is targeted to adults. The kids loved the heated swimming pool (even in March!), jacuzzi, and sauna, and the recreation room that included a large, flat-screen TV with PlayStation.

The nicest part is the detail: the rooms are each slightly different, and the lobby area includes a *real* relaxing area to hang out, read, listen to music and have a drink of coffee (morning) or something stronger (evening). I usually don't hang out in the common room, but this was an exception.

Oh yes, if you're a techie, Porches has a high-speed internet connection into every room, and an internet connected PC in the lobby area.
