Hotel in a bad location

The hotel is a converted motel - all rooms open to the parking lot. The hotel room itself had been recently renovated and was very nice and clean. However the hotel is in a bad part of town. There is a trailer park across the street with shack-type homes on the other side of the hotel. Traffic went by all night, hookers could be heard screaming their love to people across the parking lot, and police accosted homeless people during the night near the hotel.
It's worth the Upgrade

When we first check-in, we were given a small room on the first floor with a parking lot view. Then we opted for the upgrade, which was a great deal. It was a second floor room that was quite large. The huge window opened to 'the rock'. You can tell that they put some work into the rooms and the property was very clean. The bed was very comfy, but the walls are thin.
The spa was old and small, but the view from the spa was great and once inside, felt very private. The location is excellent - walking distance to everything you would want and the continental breakfast was very convienient.
All in all worth the upgrade and a nice place to stay - I'll definitely come back.
2 star hotel pretending to be a 3 star

My family stayed here one evening after visiting Hearst Castle. Like most hotels in Morro Bay, it is a motor inn where you open your door to the parking lot. Convenient location just 2 blocks from the main strip and you can see Morro Rock right down the street from the sidewalk (my room's window looked out onto a cinderblock wall). The parking lot is actually cute with all the flowers. The hotel has obviously has been recently renovated with newer furniture and paint, but its still an old hotel and the job was more cosmetic. The shower worked ok, but the toilet handle had to be held down continuously to flush and you could tell they painted over many spots in the bathroom where the walls have crumbled.
The bed was terrible. My wife said she slept ok but I couldn't. It was hard as a rock. The problem with a motor inn is the noise. I could hear everyone that left their room going out to smoke, plus a domestic disturbance during the night (whether that was in the hotel or the trailer park across the street I don't know). We awoke at 5am to the sound of water dripping. Turned out it was the room above us that had flooded and the water was literally dripping through our ceiling.
Skip their "breakfast" that consists of cold cereal and wrapped danishes and go to the country breakfast place behind the hotel -- it was good.
A 2 star hotel is ok if you're looking for a room on the cheap, but we paid a 3 star price hoping for a better quality hotel. That is my primary complaint. I could have paid less for the same thing at a 2 star hotel. I would not stay here again.
Our short stay in Morro Bay

We've been coming here for years. We love staying in Morro Bay and vistiing Cambria, including the Hearst Castle at times, San Luis, the wineries, Pismo Beach and all that the central Callfornia coast has to offer. We usually stay at the Masterpiece Motel in Morro, but they did not have the rooms that we like available this time. We usually come off-season. The Tradewinds Best Western was hospitable and we had a nice room with a view of the rock and close to all of the shopping etc. We would stay again, but probably in the off season and as a second choice to the Masterpiece.

The room was comfortable and clean. It was good to be in walking distance to the embarcadreo. But the spa looked dirty and the continental breakfast was terrible-stale pastries bad coffee. There is an excelent breakfast place nextdoor.
