Nice.... But Not My Favorite Place to Stay!

Before I start this review, in all fairness, there is nothing wrong with this hotel.... and it IS part of the Red Lion chain !! I just prefer smaller places, or one of the scenic lodges when I stay in this area.
This hotel is very convenient, and has nearly 200 rooms available. I do stay here when I am going to Canada. It is very close to the dock for the Victoria ferry, and I can easily walk there for an early sailing.
The hotel is located in the downtown area... right on the waterfront. It has ample room for parking. Many rooms have microwaves, and refrigerators, and balconies overlooking the harbor. . All rooms have coffee makers, free Internet, and cable TV with HBO. There is also a swimming pool (outdoors), a whirlpool, and a fitness center.
The service is good... the rooms are clean. The maids seem very efficient. Rooms offer you a choice of King or Queen beds.
There is an on-site restaurant -- The Port Angeles CrabHouse. Yes, it does have delicious crab cakes.... you should try them! It opens early at 5:30 am, so you have time to eat breakfast before catching the early boat to Victoria. It also serves seafood, steaks, chicken, pastas, and the usual basic menu items for lunch and dinner. I have never been served a bad meal here, and I do recommend it.
The CrabHouse Lounge features TVs in every corner... plus a big 52" plasma screen TV - great for watching sports !! There is a Happy Hour Sunday-Friday with appetizers and drink specials.
Shopping is within easy walking distance. There are many small shops and bookstores in the downtown area, as well as a big Goodwill store a few blocks up the hill from the hotel..... if you'd like to search for "treasures". Also, there is a large variety of other restaurants to choose from if the CrabHouse is too crowded, or you are staying for more than a day and want more choices.
This is a convenient hotel if you plan to visit Olympic National Park, or drive to the ocean beaches. Port Angeles also offers hiking, golfing, fishing, and (winter) skiing.

I stayed 07/29/07 to 08/12/07. Room was very clean & nice. several days during my stay the rooms were not properly cleaned. The keys are a chronic problem I am sure it must be corrected before winter. location is very nice. people at front desk are very helpful.

Met our needs

Comfortable beds, good location, responsive staff, spacious bathrooms. Right on the waterfront, you can walk to restaurants (we ate at the Indian one across the street - delicious!), also a Thai restaurant we didn't try. You can walk to a beachfront playground and marine center that's open in the summer, also a walking path along the beach. A few things in the room: bathroom door didn't close completely, burned out lightbulb above vanity, dirty bathroom mirror when we checked in. We called front desk about the mirror and they cleaned it right away and apologized. Not top of the line, but certainly good enough for a great night's sleep on our way to Victoria. Easy driving distance to parts of Olympic National Park and a Safeway grocery nearby to pick up picnic lunch stuff. Smells a little fishy outside at times, I guess that comes with the territory.

Red Lion

A guy like me would never spend more than $100/night for a hotel room. But I splurged and spent $200/night at the Red Lion. Was it worth it, in a word - YES! The location was incredible, right on the waterfront. A bike trail crossed in front of my balcony and made easy access to the rest of town by foot. I didn't get in the rental car for two days!

The room was very spacious and included a comfortable chair to watch TV. The best part - the balcony. I could watch the boats go in and out of port, and enjoy a couple concerts from the pier while sitting on the balcony of my own room.

More advantages to the Red Lion's location is short walking distance to just about everything. Shopping, a wide variety of food options, and the ferries were within a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel.

Our Late Family Vacation

The Red Lion was a pleasant surprise for us. We've never really had a family vacation. My 70 year old mother, my teenage daughters and I, (Mom), spent a week in the Olympic National Park. We had a disaster at the Lake Quinault Lodge but the Red Lion in Port Angeles was great. The card keys didn't work. This is my pet peeve and we had to return to the lobby on two separate occasions. Also, the food in the restaurant does not warrant the extravagant price. Sorry. I loved the wait staff though.
