Decent Hotel, Especially if Budget is a Concern

I had to make last minute travel plans to Chicago for a job interview. I'm also a student, so I didn't want to break the bank. Chinatown fit the bill perfectly. The staff were very friendly and helpful. You shouldn't have any problems interacting with staff. They helped out whenever possible and did a respectable job. They also gave some good recommendations about where the best food in the neighborhood could be found. If you're a complete xenophobe you might have a problem but I honestly thought these people were great and did their job well. The room definitely won't be featured on any Travel Channel shows anytime soon but it was comfortable for my girlfriend and I. I was surprised that the bathroom amenities were as nice as they were. Brand new tile, nice toilet, and a piping hot shower with good pressure. We loved the Chinese language channels on the TV in our few down moments and while packing. The choice of paint job won't win any design awards but it won't affect you being able to sleep either. If your a priss and you need pomp and luxury you'd probably do best to take your pampered ego north to Michigan Ave. Location is what this hotel has in spades. It's right next to a red and green line station (Cermak-Chinatown), literally a 45 second walk from the front door. Late night eats abound in Chinatown. I traveled by train and it was very convenient to Union Station via Canal St. (taxi) or transit (red or green line). There's also a great jazz club just down the street, Velvet Room on Cermak. I'd recommend this hotel to any non-prissy traveler looking for a place to sleep in Chicago.

Good Experience

We decided to try the Chinatown Hotel, even though the reviews were mixed. We were pleasantly surprised. We had our four year old grandson with us, and Chinatown was a very interesting experience for him! The L was nearby, and so we were able to have easy access to the Shedd Aquarium, as well as Downtown. The rooms were small, but clean, and the service was very good.

guy at front desk trying to calm customer who wanted out. Bad sign # 1. Got our keys, went up dirty stairs, dirty hallway, no elevator, to filthy rooms, dirty bed cover, worn out bed, tiny room, filthy carpet, dirty bathroom. Worst hotel i've ever been in.

"Great area and price, disgusting blanket & pillow"

Chinatown is filled with fantastic restaurants (cheap, too). Bubble tea!CTA station ~2 min away, but filled with homeless people begging for change.Hotel was fairly clean except for the blankets and pillows in all 3 rooms we booked. The throws and pillows were disturbingly dirty: greyish-beige-brown, stained with god knows what (urine, blood) -- I had to take them off the bed completely and only deal with white things (comforter, sheets). This is the only hotel that didn't charge for the extra people who stayed in our rooms. The public computer?s internet was not working.
